Description

Veredus worked with Capita who secured the Data Communications Company licence. The success of Smart DCC will change the energy industry in Great Britain forever and it was crucial that Veredus find the best individuals in the market to meet this challenge. Veredus conducted executive searches during the bid phase and into the life of Smart DCC Ltd for a Director of Operations, Commercial Director, Chief Information Security Officer and a Director of Design and Assurance.

Smart DCC Ltd Case Study Delivering a smart energy infrastructure for the country Background The Government has a vision for every one of the 30m homes in Great Britain to have intelligent gas and electricity Smart Meters installed by 2020. The Smart Metering programme will be the catalyst for the most significant, expansive and innovative changes to the Energy Sector in Great Britain for more than twenty years and is undoubtedly one of the most challenging and exciting projects currently being undertaken in this country. Smart DCC Ltd has been created to lead the successful delivery of a brand new national infrastructure, with highly secure and reliable communications and data services to connect the Smart Meters with energy suppliers, network operators and authorised third parties such as energy service companies. The roll-out of Smart Meters will play an important part in Britain’s transition to a low-carbon economy and help us meet some of the longterm challenges we face in ensuring an affordable, secure and sustainable energy supply. Consumers will have near real time information on their energy consumption to help them manage their energy use, save money and reduce emissions. Smart Meters will also provide consumers with more accurate information and bring an end to estimated billing. The interests of consumers lie at the heart of the Smart Metering Programme. Smart Meters enable the following benefits: • • • • Near real time information on energy use - expressed in pounds and pence. Consumers will be able to manage their energy use, save money and reduce emissions. More flexibility - more tailored tariffs to suit individual customers. Easier switching - it will be smoother and faster to switch suppliers to get the best deals. New products and services - to help better manage energy. In future, suppliers will be able to offer different prices at different times of day. Smart appliances could be set to switch on when energy is cheaper. www.veredus.co.uk

Smart DCC Ltd Case Study The Smart Metering System Veredus worked with Capita who secured the DCC licence to recruit the key Senior Management positions for this brand new organisation. The Roles Veredus conducted sensitive Executive Search processes for roles that were absolutely fundamental to the success of Smart DCC. We were searching for highly skilled technical leaders who were able to operate in a complex federated partnership environment that would be extremely high profile in nature while also being regulated by Ofgem, driven by the energy industry and scrutinised by consumers. The aim was to build the most talented and dynamic Senior Management Team in the UK to drive and deliver this prestigious programme. The team will be working to ensure that there is a fully integrated and effective end-to-end solution and service delivery processes working in partnership with the fundamental service providers who were named as TelefÓnica UK, Arquiva and CGI. They will be looking to reflect the business requirements of the Smart Energy Code (SEC) while preparing the system for the future opportunities such a platform will enable. www.veredus.co.uk

Smart DCC Ltd Case Study The Challenge These roles were unique and would operate in an organisation that did not exist at the time and would develop a brand new infrastructure and market for the UK. Veredus had to work closely with the Managing Director designate of Smart DCC to develop job descriptions and person specifications providing expertise around where to source and search for individuals who would have the transferable skills that would ensure delivery of such a complex programme. The search programmes were necessarily broad and deep in order to source the best talent across numerous sectors. The key directions of investigation were major energy companies, system integrators, telecommunications companies, telecommunication network operators, major IT consultancies, outsourcing companies and professional service companies. The search process commenced during a competitive bid process so individuals were engaged into the process with the knowledge that there was not 100% certainty that the role would actually come into existence. This required developing honest and open relationships with candidates while managing the sensitive offer processes once the licence was secured. The key challenge was ensuring that we secured individuals who had the necessary blend of technical competence, strategic stakeholder management, major programme delivery and senior leadership experience. This meant some excellent candidates were not considered because they did not meet the breadth of experience that was required in these unique roles. The Results Veredus was able to secure individuals into a number of the roles quickly so that the appointed candidates were able to help in the prebid award planning phase. This gave the bid more depth and further confidence to the awarding body that Capita would be able to mobilise the new organisation quickly following the award of the contract. The remaining individuals were appointed shortly after the award of the contract and transitioned into the new roles as quickly as possible working a staged notice period from their current roles. Veredus was subsequently commissioned to deliver some further senior technical positions to ensure the delivery capacity of the organisation grew at the required rate. Aaron Webster, Director of Energy, Manufacturing and Infrastructure at Veredus commented that “To have the opportunity to work on this project and secure such important appointments for such a prestigious and high profile programme was an absolute privilege. We look forward to continuing our work with Smart DCC Ltd and supporting it with future leadership recruitment as its role develops in the delivery of this new national infrastructure.” To discuss your recruitment requirements, please contact Aaron Webster, Director, Head of Energy, Manufacturing and Infrastructure on: +44 (0) 7703 470 770 aaron.webster@veredus.co.uk www.veredus.co.uk
