SRFB A GIS Implementation of Fish Kill Reporting Darragh O’Keeffe MASGIS ASU 2010
What is SRFB? • Irish government agency Southern Regional Fisheries Board Bord Iascaigh Reigiunach an Deiscirt • Mission 1. Conserve, protect and enhance inland fisheries and sea angling habitats through relevant resource conservation methods 2. Manage a quality fisheries resource that contributes and optimizes economic, social, environmental and recreational benefits 3. Utilize IT to benefit the operations of the Board
Objectives • To create a GIS of fish kill reports • Produce maps • Analyze the data • Automate and simplify data entry
Fish Kill Reports • Reports since 1989 • Word documents • Pre-GIS • • • • Attributes: Date, River, Grid reference, Species, Count, Cause, Officer Digitize data Create database and shapefiles
Grid System •Irish Transverse Mercator, ITM Geographic Coordinate System: GCS_TM65 Datum: D_TM65 •25 squares 100km X 100km e.g. R 425 028
X,Y coordinates georeferenced to form point feature class Associated attributes added to a Geodatabase
Various maps produced
Data Analysis • Trends in empirical raw data? • Cause, Source, Time Eutrophication - High concentration of nutrients, phosphates and nitrates Agricultural Effluent •Acidic, high levels of nitrates •Oxygen demand > 100 to 200 times raw sewage
Census data • • • • Agricultural workforce 2006 Small Area Population Statistics (SAPS) .xls or .csv Electoral Division Boundary Files – Tiger files Attribute and Spatial data joined together. 847 records
Analysis and Results • • T-Test of two Independent Samples Null Hypothesis H0 : At α = 0.05 will there be a higher percentage of agricultural workers in areas where fish kills are reported? • Results: P value (Sig) = 0.47 > 0.05 Retain H0 The areas with kills and areas with no kills reported, produced similar results (there was no significant difference in the % of people working in agriculture) Conclusions • Fish Kills occur most often in the summer months • Fish kills occur randomly with respect to agricultural workforce • Impossible to predict where a fish kill will occur • Detailed data on agricultural activity needed
Automate Data Entry • • • • Ease of use for Field Officers No knowledge of ArcGIS Google Maps, PHP, MySQL Export .csv to ARC MySQL PHP Web Server
Questions and Answers
The reports contained little quantitative data on which to perform statistical analysis Assumptions: Bivariate data: 1 categorical variable, Locations (group 1 & 2) and 1 numerical variable (% employed in agriculture). Each group comes from populations with approximately normal data. Homogeneity of Variance.
