And scholars believed that the word Butuan originated from the word “But-an”, which literally means a person who has a sound and discerning disposition, or one who is thoughtful, pleasing in manners, noble, intelligent, understanding, kind, helpful and merciful. BRIEF HISTORY : BRIEF HISTORY Butuan is originally located Pinamanculan by the banks of the Masao River, about a kilometer from Libertad… Because of floods, the people moved to Baug, now the municipality of Magallanes at the mouth of Agusan River. Later, they transferred to Banza, about five kilometers inland of Agusan River. Still troubled with floods, the people once settled this time permanently, in a higher place called Agao, which is the present site of the city proper. The Agusan River greatly helped the booming of the “logging industry” (1960s – 1970s) which earned Butuan the name “Timber City of the South” HISTORIC SITES OF BUTUAN : HISTORIC SITES OF BUTUAN National Museum- Butuan Branch : National Museum- Butuan Branch This museum is the repository of historical and cultural materials and artifacts that proves Butuan’s prehistoric existence and rich cultural heritage. The best evidence to prove this fact is the discovery of 9 balangays (the BUTUAN BOAT) in Ambangan, Libertad near the old El Rio de Butuan now, Masao River. This museum housed the balangay 1 dated 320AD. This wooden plank-built and edged pegged boat average 15 meters in length and 3 meters wide across the beam.
