Bus Tour to Philip Simmons Home Field Trip & Bus Tour to Philip Simmons Home and Workshop. Spend a morning Philip Simmons downtown home, workshop and other sites featuring his famed iron art pieces! The late Mr. Simmons was born on Daniel Island in 1912 and later moved to downtown, where he honed his award-winning career as a Master Blacksmith. February 22 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm | $20 per person His treasured gates and ironwork pieces adorn many a home and garden throughout the area. His work is also on display at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. We will have an opportunity to tour his home, which is now a museum house and gift shop, as well as his workshop, where his apprentices – nephew, Carlton Simmons, and cousin, Joseph “Ronnie” Pringle – are continuing to practice the art that Simmons taught them. In addition, we will enjoy other sites featuring his works in the downtown area. This will be an RSVP event and a limited number of spaces will be available. The fee to attend is $20. Absolutely Charleston will provide roundtrip transportation services from Daniel Island and Lee Ann Bain, a licensed Charleston tour guide (www.charlestonhistoryblog.com), will offer insights on Simmons life throughout the program. Registration for DIHS members opens February 1. Non-members may register beginning February 10. To register, please send an email to Lee Ann Bain at vicepresident@dihistoricalsociety.com. She will provide details about the program to you, and once payment is received your spot will be confirmed. For additional information, please contact Lee Ann Bain at vicepresident@dihistoricalsociety.com.
