March 9, 2014 - First Sunday of Lent| 3 CONFIRMATION CELEBRATION 2014 Tuesday, June 3rd , 2014 6:00 p.m. - Serra Center Ques ons? Contact 760-757-3250 Fr. Adrian’s Corner You will have no ced that it is the Season of Lent in the Church – our colors have changed and our liturgical environment looks different. Lent is a somber and reflec- ve me of prayer and penance but also of an cipa on. We simplify things and hold back a bit so that we can give free reign to the celebra on of Easter spectacularly. In Lent especially, the Church invites us to prayer, fas ng and outreach to the poor – three disciplines that open the door of the heart to a deeper consciousness and awareness of the gi of faith. We should run into Lent like children run excitedly into the water at the beach, delighted and eager to experience all that God is wai ng to give us. So I wish you a Happy Lent! Thank you to Linda Causee, Phyllis Magee and their team for the wonderful changes to the liturgical environ- ment in all the chapels and worship spaces on the Mis- sion/Parish campus. It’s Lent alright! Congratula ons to the new Core Team of the Small Chris an Communi es. They are Marion Franowicz (Coordinator), Claudia LaBarge (Co-Coordinator), Elsa Ramirez (Hispanic Community Coordinator), Maria Ramirez (Hispanic Community Co-Coordinator), and Ow- en Ofiesh who acts as Secretary to the Team. The Core Team will have a Mini Retreat at the Mission on March 29th from 9:00 am ll 1:00 pm conducted by Fr. Michael Higgins, TOR. We wish you many blessings as you begin your service to the SCC as leaders. Students from The Franciscan School of Theology will host a Young Adult Program for our parish and for young adults in North County Catholic Parishes beginning March 13. For more informa on, you can read the next column’s ar cle by Marcus Cabrera, an FST student and the main organizer of this outreach to young adults. Best wishes to all involved and have a great me togeth- er. Abbot Damien Toilolo, OSB from St. Andrew Abbey in Valyermo begins three days of reflec on for Lent begin- ning on Monday 10 (tomorrow) in the Parish Chapel at 7:00 p.m. There will be Eucharist and homily each night followed by fellowship in the Parish Dining Room. The Spanish retreat takes place later in the month on the theme “the Joy of the Gospel.” All are welcome! Have a wonderful week and God bless. Fr. Adrian “They were con nually devo ng themselves to the teachings, fellowship, and to the breaking of the bread and to prayer.” ~ Acts 2:42 This passage sounds like a beau ful history lesson, but what if it is a prophecy for a be er tomorrow? What if this can happen - right here at MSLRP - today? My name is Marcus Cabrera, I am blessed to have been involved in parish youth ministry in our diocese since gradua ng from USD in 2012. A er this short and won- derful experience, I have been a graduate student at the Franciscan School of Theology (FST), hoping to focus ex- clusively on studying - but God had other plans! It is with great excitement that I announce that FST in partnership with Mission San Luis Rey Parish is launching one of the most cu ng-edge Young Adult ministries in the en re San Diego Diocese. What makes this Young Adult Ministry so unique? We have combined the energy from the FST’s graduate program, fellowship from MSLRP, and the holiness of the Mass to bring a truly powerful Young Adult Ministry to North County. Beginning Thursday, March 13th, from 7:00-9:00pm, the Young Adult Ministry will meet in the Peyri Room inside the Mission, and redefine how we see Thursday nights. Within this short me, the night will first begin with a potluck-style communal dinner, so make sure to bring food to share! This will be a good me to introduce your- self over a meal and befriend some of your Catholic fami- ly from North County. A er this, we will move into a dis- cussion led by one of the young adult graduate students at FST pertaining to anything from discernment, current issues, theology, their own research, and anything else you would like to ask, share, and discuss with these young graduate students! No friendship is more reward- ing than one bonding over the deepness of our Faith with fellow Catholics! Finally, the night will end with an in - mate Mass in the gorgeous St Clare Chapel - just for us! With a night of food, fellowship, and faith, Thursday nights with the Young Adult Ministry will be the place to be! I look forward to befriending more of you, my brothers and sisters, and I thank God for this wonderful opportuni- ty to bring Christ to a genera on of young Catholics that is eager to welcome Him and one another! Come meet some new friends, break bread, and share the Bread of Angels in the Eucharist together! Ques ons? Comments?

Lent is an old Anglo-Saxon word which originally simply meant the spring season. We are told by those who know that it derives from the Germanic root for long, because in spring the days visibly lengthen. These days, as we move towards Lent, you can almost sense nature readying to move, to shoot forth with new life, fresh greenness and hope-filled promise in the steadily lengthening days. The season of Lent, on the personal level, is also an invita on to newness, new beginnings, renewed and re- stored rela onships with the Lord and with one another. The Gospels call it conversion, change of direc on, change of heart. It may be just a slight correc on, or it may be something more like a Road to Damascus-type conversion, a complete turn-around. But whatever we are invited to, we must believe that, with the help of the Lord, it is possible. Who would have thought my shrivl’d heart Could have recovered greenness? So marveled the poet George Herbert, poe cally expressing what many familiar Gospel characters experi- enced through the healing and forgiving ministry of Jesus: it is possible to recover greenness, even though our hearts may have become shriveled by so many nega ve experiences. It is always possible to begin again, to look forward with renewed hope. Although we may be unfaithful, he is always faithful. Call to mind Zacchaeus, or the woman taken in adultery, think of Peter - in each case a new beginning was made possible by the compassionate words or ac ons of Jesus. Think of the great Lenten image of the Prodi- gal Son and the prodigal love of the father: the young man is enabled to rise from the depths and come home to warmth, welcome and rejoicing. A new beginning, if ever there was one. Our calling to the single life, married life, priesthood or consecrated life does not take away our humanity or our human weakness. Each day presents us with irrita ons, tempta ons – major or minor, lost opportuni es to do good, missed opportuni es for new beginnings. Take one of Pope Francis’ recurring themes: making peace, renewing broken rela onships, being channels of reconcilia on. What he says to couples applies equally to communi es: It is not unusual to quarrel; there’s always some- thing. Perhaps you were angry. Perhaps the plates were flying. But please remember this: never end the day without making peace. Never. Never. Never. It may be sufficient to say: Sorry, I was red. Or a small gesture. But make peace.. Perhaps we could begin there!
