ACTIVE GNU Message from the President 04 05 GNU is full of pioneering spirit, opening the Neo Frontier Gyeongsang National University (GNU) is the flagship institution representing Gyeongnam. GNU was initially founded as Jinju Provincial Agricultural College in 1948, became a national institution in 1968, was re-named Gyeongsang in 1972 and became accredited as a university in 1980. GNU consists of three campuses: Gajwa, Chilam and Tongyeong, with 760 professors, an enrollment of 24,000 students, 500 administrative employees, 100 departments, and 9 graduate schools. Keeping pace with the world, GNU in Gyeongnam is cultivating core global leaders. GNU is a successful model in three specialty fields – biological science, mechanical/aerospace engineering and new nano materials. We also cultivate highly-skilled health and medical professionals from the Graduate School of Medicine, the College of Nursing, the College of Pharmacy, the Graduate School of Public Health, the Graduate School of Food and Medicine, GNU Hospital and the new GNU Hospital in Changwon that will open in 2015. In order to attain GNU’s vision, ‘The university in Gyeongnam keeping pace with the world - ACTIVE GNU!’, we have set as our objectives to: 1) improve and advance education; 2) specialize and integrate research, and 3) localize and globalize community services. GNU supports 30 specialized education programs by department, nurtures 30 research groups with competiveness, and also assists an additional 30 local collaboration programs and community services in order to achieve these objectives. GNU has distinguished itself in government-funded enterprises among other well-known universities in the nation. GNU operates 9 Graduate School enterprises in Brain Korea 21, and 6 enterprises in World Class University (WCU), which ranked #1 in the interim evaluation in December 2010. The Systems & Synthetic Agrobiotech Center was selected as part of the Next Generation Bio Green 21 Enterprise by the Rural Development Administration, and the Agro-Medical Fusion Enterprise is being actively promoted to supplement the welfare of rural areas. GNU was selected as an Education Capacity Building Enterprise for four years in a row and has obtained many enterprises from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the Rural Development Administration and other local governments, and uses government funds for scholarships. All GNU members work together to realize our ‘ACTIVE & GLOBAL University’. Through our Global Pioneer Program (GPP), overseas volunteer services and English Only Zone Program, GNU cultivates global leaders for the 21st century.
