Paper Wasps : Paper Wasps Wasps Stingers of The World By Brendan Why did I pick this animal? : Why did I pick this animal? I picked this animal because I didn’t know much about wasps. I want to know how big can there nests grow. I also, want to know how they make their nests. Description : Description Description : Description Most paper wasps measure about 2 cm long They are black, brown, or reddish in color with yellow markings. They have two sets of wings and a narrow waist Adaptations : Adaptations A wasp has a stinger for protection The flapping of its wings creates a buzzing sound that warns animals and people that they are near Saliva is used to break down materials to make a waterproof nest. Habitat : Habitat General Habitat Information : General Habitat Information Nesting sites could be holes in the ground, hollow trees, sheds loft spaces etc. The queen wasp starts to build her nest with a papery material that she makes by chewing wood mixed with saliva; this is known as wasp paper. Wasps will build nests where they have access to protected areas of buildings. Temperatures : Temperatures In late summer, queens stop laying eggs and the colony soon begins to decline. In the fall, mated female offspring of the queen seek overwintering sites. The remainder of the colony does not survive the winter. At the onset of cold weather all the wasps, including the old queen, die Water : Water Wasps are thirsty creatures Wasps use water to cool off Wasps can be found around bird baths, fish ponds or water features in a garden European paper wasp evaporating water from a regurgitated droplet to cool itself Plant Life : Plant Life Wasps need plants. Nests are built from wood fiber collected from live plant stems Wasps can be found on flowers Animal Life : Animal Life Paper wasps prey on insects such as caterpillars, flies and beetle larvae which they feed to larvae. They need flower nectar for energy. Gardeners like paper wasps because they keep some common garden pests under control. Sensory Organs : Sensory Organs Sensory Organs : Sensory Organs Wasps can see fast movement better then slow. They have compound eyes. They do not have noses they use their antennae to smell things. They can use their antennae to taste and feel things too. They can detect sound through vibrations felt in their skin, legs, or antennae. Food and Life Cycles : Food and Life Cycles Life Cycle : Life Cycle Queens construct a basic paper fiber nest roughly the size of a walnut into which she will begin to lay eggs A single female queen is capable of building an entire colony from only herself. Queens only live for only one year. The colony dies in the fall with only the newly produced queens surviving the winter. Food Chain : Food Chain The sun makes the flowers The wasps eats the nectar from the flowers and other animals that rely on plants. Humans kill the paper wasps Interesting Facts : Interesting Facts Interesting Fact Number #1 : Interesting Fact Number #1 Wasps attack when the nest is disturbed and each can sting repeatedly. Interesting Fact #2 : Interesting Fact #2 In some species the nest is built underground. Interesting Fact #3 : Interesting Fact #3 Most wasps are beneficial in their natural habitat. They are natural enemies of many garden insect pests. Interesting Fact #4 : Interesting Fact #4 What is the difference between bees and wasps? Bees are hairier and feed mostly on flowers Wasps have brighter colors and hunt other animals Resources : Resources http://insectstamu.edu/fieldguide/cimg348.html http://www.extermine.com/wasps.html http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1E1-wasp.html http://books.google.com/books?id=m9JjEhkEiKAC&pg=PA6&lpg=PA6&dq=wasp+compound+eyes&source=bl&ots=aHlNUjpJkD&sig=7QrzVXhMUQjOvboCPHvO47RiUDU&hl=en&ei=HJK3SaO9DuPetgeXkIWmCQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=4&ct=result#PPA8,M1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wasp http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_wasp http://www.everythingabout.net/articles/biology/animals/arthropods/insects/wasps/paper_wasp/ The End : The End Buzz off!
