The Bosnian Serbs disapproved of the Bosniaks running their government. He altered the military to 90% Serbian He increased his role in the country’s mass media, financial, and security structures to help maintain Serbian nationalists in Serbia, Croatia, and Bosnia. He (with the help of others) convinced Serbian civilians that Croatian, Bosnian, and Albanian people would threaten their rights. Causes: Causes Percentage of ethnicities in Bosnia before: 44% Bosnian Muslim, 31% Serbian, 17% Croat, and 8% Yugoslav Serbians disapproved of a Bosnic-run nation They decided to do an “ethnic cleansing” By June 1991, Slovenia and Croatia had declared independence from Yugoslavia Violence : Violence City of Vukovar fell Serbs conducted mass executions of Croat men Buried them in mass graves Would attack safe houses Execution cites “Ethnic cleansing,” -torture, rape, murder, robbery, and forced displacement “Siege of Sarajevo,”- snipers (targeting citizens getting food or water), mass executions, confinement in concentration camps, torture and systematic rape Largest Mass Killing in Europe Since Holocaust: Largest Mass Killing in Europe Since Holocaust Serbs killed 100,000 people 80,000 of the 100,000 were Bosniaks 8,000 of the 80,000 were Bosniak Men and Boys 25,000-30,000 of the 80,000 were Women and Girls Aftermath: Aftermath By then end of fighting, 200,000 Bosniaks were dead Over 20,000 were missing 2,000,000 were refugees Some say the hardest part for the loved ones of those who died was not knowing what happened to them in battle.
