Life and Literary career :  Life and Literary career Chaucer was the son of a wine merchant who had connections with the Court. He began life as a page in a nobleman’s household. Then he went to France at 19 on one of the campaigns of the Hundred Years’ War, and was taken prisoner. On his return, he married Phillip pa, a maid of honour to the queen and relative of John of Gaunt, the Duke of Lancaster, who became his patron. He died in 1400 and was buried in Westminster Abbey, thus founding the Poets’ Corner。 Chaucer ‘s literary career can be divided into three periods corresponding with the stages of his life. The first period consists of works translated from French, as The Romaunt of the Rose. The second consists of works adapted from the Italian, as Troilus and Criseyde. The third includes The Canterbury Tales, which is purely English. Jane Austen :  Jane Austen Jane Austen(1775-1817)   a major English novelist, lived and worked at the turn of the 19th century. She was the daughter of a country clergyman, and passed all her life in doing small domestic duties in the countryside. She was educated at home and began to write at an early age. Living a quiet life in the countryside, she kept her eyes steadily upon the people and incidents about her, and wrote about the small world she lived in. She wrote 6 novels: Northanger Abbey, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, and Persuasion. Pride and Prejudice is the most widely read among them. Stand by your parents in their time of need. stand up for: to defend, support Slide30:  IN order to impress the reader deeply or emphasize his opinion, the author can use repetition or paralleled structure. In the first and second paragraph of part A, by using ten “I remember …”sentences, the author write “my” impression of Wayne Booth ’s appearance(his bear, his soft smile), his special manner while listening to students and his affection towards his family. In the third paragraph, by using paralleled structure, “but I remember and try to emulate what he stood for: a carefulness, a scholarly rigor, … a loving reverence for the poetry of Geoffrey Chaucer.” the author try to emulate what Burke Severs stood for: carefulness, graveness, preciseness, cautious, self-deprecation… Slide31:  When describe a person, we usually say something about his appearance , character and manner. Examples from Part A: “I remember how he smiled when he was amused--- his was a soft smile, not a brittle one.” “I remember how he cooked his head, looking with intense concentration at the classroom floor, when he was listening to someone try to express a thought,” “ He sat ,almost Buddha-like, at the head of the seminar table.” Slide32:  Examples from Emma, Chapter One: “Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; …” Examples from Jane Eyre , Chapter Twelve: “ Something of daylight still lingered, and the moon was waxing bright; I could see him plainly. His figure was enveloped in a riding cloak, fur collared, and steel clasped; its details were not apparent, but I traced the general points of middle height, and considerable breadth of chest. He had a dark face, with stern features and a heavy brow; his eyes and gathered eyebrows looked ireful and thwarted just now; …” Slide34:  Do translation exercises. Describe a person you like best.
