Using Theories of Stigma and Impression Management to Understand and Evaluate Responses to Tourism Crises : Using Theories of Stigma and Impression Management to Understand and Evaluate Responses to Tourism Crises Dr. Bonalyn J. Nelsen Saint Michael’s College Colchester, Vermont USA Tourism Crises and Impression Management : Tourism Crises and Impression Management Problem: Tourism studies seldom explain how specific responses/strategies manage—or fail to manage--audiences’ impressions of a destination’s image. Studies do not evaluate tactics, or… Indirect economic measures are used Paper draws on sociological theories of stigma management and impression management to offer a conceptual framework for describing, categorizing, and explaining how recovery strategies manage impressions following a tourism crisis Identify strategies and explain how they work Identify strengths and weaknesses Why Use Theories of Stigma and Impression Management? : Why Use Theories of Stigma and Impression Management? Sociologists and social psychologists have examined stigma and stigma management for four decades: Stigma is any condition or attribute that is “deeply discrediting” and spoils the host’s social identity (Goffman 1963; Jones et al. 1984; Page 1984) Can affect people, places, activities, events, organizations, and occupations Produces negative reactions to host, including formation of negative impressions and stereotypes, discrimination, avoidance, marginalization, and withdrawal of support Theories of stigma management and impression management have identified and explained how different strategies/responses manage negative impressions How are Negative Impressions Managed in Image-threatening Situations? : How are Negative Impressions Managed in Image-threatening Situations? Possessing a discrediting attribute need not result in stigmatization--social images will be spoiled only if structural preconditions are met: Audience members actually perceive and take note of the discrediting condition Audiences consider the condition to be threatening or unpleasant Audiences deem local authorities to be at least somewhat responsible for the condition Impression management strategies avert or mitigate damage to social image by manipulating these conditions What I Did: Theory and Methods : What I Did: Theory and Methods Data from 34 published case studies and reports dating from 1989 used to identify, code, and analyze responses to tourism crises (n=26 crises/disasters) Matched responses to influence of structural preconditions leading to stigmatization: Did response prevent audience members actually perceive and take note of the discrediting condition? Did response make the event seem less threatening or unpleasant? Did response make authorities/presenters seem less responsible for the condition? Hierarchy of seven impression management strategies identified, vary by degree to which presenters acknowledge crisis Typology of Impression Management Strategies : Typology of Impression Management Strategies No Acknowledgement Full Acknowledgement Concealment Denial Disconfirmation Acknowledgement Assurance Discounting Impression Management Strategies:Summary : Impression Management Strategies:Summary Paper presented a hierarchy of seven impression management strategies used to manage destination image following tourism crisis All have strengths and weaknesses Some post-crisis strategies (discounting, withdrawal) do little to manage negative impressions of the destination among external audiences Even responses that appear dubious can successfully manage impressions under certain conditions (concealment, denial) Next step is to use findings to devise testable hypotheses about the contingencies under which each response is most and least likely to be effective
