The Order of Operations •BODMAS are used so that we don’t have to overuse parenthesis. • If we want to multiply 2*3 and then add by 5*4 you can’t write it like 2*3+5*4. You would have to do like 2*3+(5*4). •The BODMAS system prioritizes the * before the +, which will let you use less brackets. • There are several more reasons which you can read at http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/72759.html An easy lesson on how to learn your BODMAS

How to use it Continued on next slide... Part 1 The exam paper says: √*4+18*2(-5+2⁴)]+5 5 Complicated, huh? But using bodmas? √[4+18*2(-5+2⁴)]+5 5 First, take out a calculator An easy lesson on how to learn your BODMAS

How to use it Problem: Continued on next slide... part 2 You’ll have to calculate the √[4+18*2(-5+2⁴)]+5 numerator first (on the top) 5 Take the inside bracket first Exponents first! √[4+18*2(-5+2⁴)]+5= 2⁴=2*2*2*2=16 Use the BODMAS insIde the brackets: √[4+18*2(-5+16)]+5= -5+16=16-5= 11 There is no sign between two and the bracket, so 2* bracket: 2*11=22 √[4+18*2(11)]+5= Then following the BODMAS, take the multiplication: (with calculator) 18*22=396 √[4+18*22]+5= An easy lesson on how to learn your BODMAS

How to use it Problem: Continued on next slide... Part 3 √[4+18*2(-5+2⁴)]+5 5 Then add the 2 numbers that are left inside the bracket: √[4+396]+5= 4+396=400 Now the square root: √400+5= √400=20 Then we only have 2 numbers left to add: 20+5= The last step is just to divide the answer by 5: 25= 25/5= 5 5 An easy lesson on how to learn your BODMAS 20+5= 25

How to use it Problem: Continued on next slide... Part 4 √[4+18*2(-5+2⁴)]+5 5 Now i can correctly state that: √[4+18*2(-5+2⁴)]+5=5 5 So the answer is: 5 An easy lesson on how to learn your BODMAS

How to use it Problem: Continued on next slide... Part 5 √[4+18*2(-5+2⁴)]+5 5 Showing the work: √*4+18*2(-5+2⁴)++5= 5 √*4+18*2(-5+16)]+5= 5 √*4+18*2(11)++5= 5 √*4+18*22++5= 5 √*4+396++5= 5 An easy lesson on how to learn your BODMAS Side notes: 2*2*2*2=16 -5+16=16-5=11 2*11=22 18*22=396 4+396=400

How to use it Problem: Continued on next slide... Part 6 √[4+18*2(-5+2⁴)]+5 5 Showing the work: √400+5= 5 20+5= 5 25= 5 Answer: √*4+18*2(-5+2⁴)++5= 5 5 An easy lesson on how to learn your BODMAS Side notes: √400=20 20+5=25 25=5 5
