The Order of Operations •BODMAS are used so that we don’t have to overuse parenthesis. • If we want to multiply 2*3 and then add by 5*4 you can’t write it like 2*3+5*4. How to use it Problem: Continued on next slide... part 2 You’ll have to calculate the √[4+18*2(-5+2⁴)]+5 numerator first (on the top) 5 Take the inside bracket first Exponents first! √[4+18*2(-5+2⁴)]+5= 2⁴=2*2*2*2=16 Use the BODMAS insIde the brackets: √[4+18*2(-5+16)]+5= -5+16=16-5= 11 There is no sign between two and the bracket, so 2* bracket: 2*11=22 √[4+18*2(11)]+5= Then following the BODMAS, take the multiplication: (with calculator) 18*22=396 √[4+18*22]+5= An easy lesson on how to learn your BODMAS

Part 3 √[4+18*2(-5+2⁴)]+5 5 Then add the 2 numbers that are left inside the bracket: √[4+396]+5= 4+396=400 Now the square root: √400+5= √400=20 Then we only have 2 numbers left to add: 20+5= The last step is just to divide the answer by 5: 25= 25/5= 5 5 An easy lesson on how to learn your BODMAS 20+5= 25
