 Currently the Director, Strategic Initiatives Lower Manhattan for the North Shore - Long Island Jewish Health System, Dr. Warren Licht also practices his specialty, Internal Medicine, as a member of the North Shore LIJ Medical Group.  Internists, as doctors of Internal Medicine are often termed, specialize in preventing, detecting, and treating illnesses in adults. They may provide comprehensive, short and long-term care both in their offices and in the hospital. They are trained in all the body’s systems, and in the diagnosis and treatment of the diseases that afflict them. They are frequently characterized as “the doctor’s doctor,” because they are so often consulted by other specialists on puzzling diagnostic cases.

 The American Board of Internal Medicine was established in 1936 to certify physicians in the specialty, so that doctors so certified were understood to have demonstrated a high degree of mastery of the subject. In the ensuing years, 19 subspecialties such as Rheumatology, Hematology, and Cardiovascular Disease have been recognized, and board-certified internists may become certified in one or more of them as well. Certification in Internal Medicine is conferred only after a doctor has completed 3 years of training in an ACGME accredited program, while certification in the various subspecialties requires fellowship training of varying lengths.
