Study Objectives for Intro to Microbiology

OB 1- Importance of Microbilogy • Minimize, respond, protect • Minimizing risk of spreading infectious diseases • Responding Intelligently to outbreaks • Protocols to protect patient and nurse from cross infection

OB 2 Various micro organisms • Bacteria is a PRO at being SINGLE, SMALL,SIMPLE, and very RESPONSIBLE. Also has a DOG. • • • • • • PRO-karyote Single-celled Small-sized, 0.5 um to 2.0 um Simple-structure Responsible- for many human diseases Dog- cell wall made of peptiDOGlycan

Protozoa • YOU KNOW FEW in this LARGE UNI COMPLEX. • • • • • • You- Eukaryote Know- no cell wall Few- human diseases Uni-cellular Large-r than bacteria 2um to over 1000 um Complex- cell structure

Fungi • YOU know FUNGI aren’t LIMITED to MULTIplying in UNI. • • • • • • You-eukayote Fungi- cell wall Limited- clinical significance Multi- cellular (mould) Uni- cellular (yeast) 4 um to large organisms (mushrooms)

Viruses • MANY of the SMALLEST things OBLIGATE you to REQUIRE NO INDEPENDENCE. • • • • • Many- human diseases Smallest- of all microorganisms 10-300 nm Obligate- intracellular parasites Require- host cell for reproduction No Independent- metabolism

OB 3 Prokaryote and Eukaryote • The PRO’S don’t need help • Eu’s do. • • Eukaryote- membrane bound organelles Prokaryote- do not holding organelles together .

OB 4 Binomial System • Based on characteristics • First word- genus-capitalised • Second word- species-lower case • Entire word is italicized

OB 5 Shapes and Growth of Bacteria

OB 6 Structure of bacteria cells CELL WALLpeptidoglycan Keeps shape Prevent cell burst Porous- doesn’t help regulate materials in and out Cell Membrane Boundary between Environment Phospholipid Bilayer Regulates Materials Makes cell wall compinents Cell Respiratory Processes Cytoplasm Semi Fluid Water/dissolved materials Many chemical reactions happen here Capsule Surrounds cell wall To avoid host defence Helps stick to surfaces Cytoplasm Semi Fluid Water/dissolved materials Many chemical reactions happen here Ribosomes RNA and proteins Protein synthesis Nuclear Region No nuclear membrane Directly in cytoplasm Large cicular chromosome Smaller dna in cytoplasm PLASMIDS Slime Layer Thinner than capsules Helps stick to surfaces (either slime layer or capsule) Pilli Attaches to surfaces Transfer of DNA

OB 7 5 bacterial infections • Campylobacteriosis • Campylobacter jejuni • Causes gastroenteritis- diarrhoea, cramping, malaise, fever

Meningococcal Disease • Neisseria meningitidis • Spreads from the nasopharynx to the blood and into the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord.

Rheumaic Fever • Streptococcus pyogenes • Complication of a sore throat. • Fever, rash, and arthritis. Antibodies that are supposed to kill bacteria begin attacking heart and other tissues.

Tuberculosis • Mycobacterium tuberculosis • Slow growing infection that leads to production of imflammatory modules called tubercles. Fever, general malaise, weight loss, and pnuemonia.

Pertussis • Bordetella pertussis • Bacteria provoke the production of a very sticky mucus in the airways which stimulates violent paroxysmal coughing.

OB 8 Fungal importance and Superficial and systemic mycoses • Antibiotics such as Penicillium notatum.
