BLACK HOLES, WORMHOLES AND TIME TRAVEL A quest for knowledge
BLACK HOLES: History Black holes had been predicted long ago by mathematics. They had long been theoretical. Now we have detected about a dozen of them.
BLACK HOLES: How they’re made Stars with large mass (at least 20 times bigger than the sun) have potential to become black holes. Most of the time gravity and pressure balance out, when they don’t the star collapses in it’s own gravity to become a black hole. But there are also other ways they are created.
BLACK HOLES: What are they? Black holes are infinitely dense and can absorb even light. You would have to travel faster than light to escape the gravitational pull.
BLACK HOLES: Different types of black holes • The miniature black holes are as small as an atom. They have also been created artificially in particle accelerators. •“Stellar” black holes have a mass of up to 20 time the sun. They are a result of collapsing stars. •“Supermassive” holes exist in the centre of all galaxies, including ours. Ours is called Saggitarius A. The are a by-product of creation of galaxies. They have a mass of at least 1 million ties that of the sun. They make the galaxies spin.
BLACK HOLES: Properties of black holes When the black hole passes by the galaxy it bends the light, distorting the image of it.
WORMHOLES: How do we know? Wormholes are a really tricky Theoretical Concept, even for modern physicists. But if you imagine it in 2D, it will be easier to understand. Here is a picture to help you understand: Now Imagine that in 3D, that my friends, is a wormhole. For skeptics: There are also mathematical Principles to support this.
WORMHOLES: How do we know? Well, we don’t know for sure that the do exist. But most signs points to their existence. Like Einstein’s famous theory: The theory of general relativity. But what is his famous theory really about? You will learn in about 4 slides.
WORMHOLES: Faster than light? So, if we can reach the other end of the universe instantaneously, wouldn’t that mean that you were traveling faster than light? No, the wormholes is like a shortcut. Now that slightly fuller than you were on slide 9, look at this picture again.
TIME TRAVEL: What is time? Time co-exists with space making the existence of matter possible. It is not just a tool for not getting late to school. It’s something that makes things (anything) possible. Time is like a line, you can travel forward on it and backwards (well…) in different speeds. It is different relatively for different objects.
TIME TRAVEL: The theory of relativity According to Einstein’s theory, if you travel at high speeds you will go forward in time. Right now we traveling forward one second per second. But if you were traveling 99.99% the speed of light for 1 second it would appear for standing observer as if it had gone 70.7 seconds.
TIME TRAVEL: Black holes You can time travel with black holes. But obviously there’s a setback (which is so obvious that there is no point mentioning it). Strong gravitational fields like the one of black holes time is slowed down relatively. As you get nearer the black hole the gravity increases and time slows down even more. This is in a way time travel and is similar to the way mentioned in the previous slide. And as we said time is like a line and it can travel at different speeds.
TIME TRAVEL: Wormholes You can not only space travel with wormholes but also time travel. Theoretically, a wormhole could be used to cut not just through space, but through time as well. To achieve time travel you need to accelerate one end of it relatively, using the technique mentioned in slide 14. Then you could travel through both space and time.
TIME TRAVEL: Time paradoxes A time paradox is a widely discussed and confusing subject. It has been discussed for a long time in sci-fi books and movies. It is basically the concept that by traveling back in time and interacting with people who have a important role in your future or maybe in your birth. It can lead to you not being born or never built that time machine that took you to the past. Interesting books about time paradoxes: By his bootstraps, Groundhog Day, Doubled and Redoubled.
