Expert Opinion ____ 7.1 AquaBounty Technologies, Dave Conley, Director of Communications Visiongain sought the opinion of Dave Conley, MSc - Director of Communications for AquaBounty Technologies (www.aquabounty.com) – a biotechnology company that is focused on improving productivity in commercial aquaculture. We interviewed Mr. Conley in February 2014 and would like to thank him for his time. 7.1.1 Trends and Developments Visiongain: What would you say are the key trends and developments in the Food Biotechnology in Production Market and why? Dave Conley: There are three general product development pathways for genetically modified (GM) foods: 1) plants, 2) animals, and 3) microorganisms. The pathways for GM plants are well established, and have been in the marketplace for the past 20 years. Currently, the majority of GM plants are destined for animal feeds, but GM plants and their byproducts destined for human consumption are steadily increasing. Among the trends in the development of GM plants are drought resistant plants, insect resistant plants, insecticide resistant plants, and specific pathogen (e.g. viruses) resistant plants. An exciting new area of GM plant innovation is the development GM seeds, grain, plants and microorganisms engineered to augment components with enhanced nutritional value, for example, soybeans containing augmented levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Similarly, there is a GM strain of yeast metabolically designed to produce omega-3 fatty acids. GM microbes are also being designed to convert low quality feedstuff by-products into high value feedstuffs, for example, fish meal substitutes. There are fewer GM animal applications due to the onerous regulatory requirements for approval of GM food animals. One of the most famous GM animals is AquaBounty Technologies’ AquAdvantage Salmon, which is a fast growing Atlantic salmon that has been genetically modified to reach market size in half the time as a conventional salmon. Other GM food fish are under development in China, Cuba, Israel, and Japan.

AquaBounty was originally incorporated in 1991, under the name A/F Protein, to pursue the commercial development of antifreeze protein-based technology under license from the University of California at Berkeley. In 1996, A/F Protein acquired a license to the AquAdvantage® technology from the University of Toronto and Memorial University of Newfoundland, and was subsequently reorganized in 2000, into two separate entities: A/F Protein, which retained the antifreeze protein technology and AquaBounty Farms, which obtained the AquAdvantage® technology. AquaBounty Farms, changed its name in 2004 to AquaBounty Technologies. In 2006, AquaBounty Technologies was listed in the London Stock Exchange’s Alternative Investment Market. It is nowadays a majority owned subsidiary of Intrexon Corporation. Today, company’s objective is the application of biotechnology to ensure the availability of high quality seafood to meet global consumer demand. The company is focusing on salmon, trout and tilapia. Its AquAdvantage® fish program is based upon a single, specific molecular modification in fish that results in more rapid growth in early development. AquAdvantage® Salmon (AAS) include a gene from the Chinook salmon, which provides the fish with the potential to grow to market size in half the time of conventional salmon. In all other respects, AAS are identical to other Atlantic salmon. In 2013, the Environment Canada, the agency of the Government of Canada with responsibility for regulating environmental policies and issues, has decided that AquAdvantage® Salmon ("AAS") is not harmful to the environment or human health when produced in contained facilities.
