Political/Social Context Early in the 1980s Margaret Thatcher introduced new economic reforms that threatened the power of trade unions. The struggle was bitter. Class division still very strong in England. Miners, although not badly paid normally, became very poor whilst on strike. Thatcher’s changes widened the class gaps. At the same time, English bands like The Clash gaining popularity. Music strongly influenced by English Punk scene.
