Hebrews 11:1-12:3 1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. 2 This is what the ancients were commended for.… 4 By faith Abel… 5 By faith Enoch… 7 By faith Noah… 8 By faith Abraham… 13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. … they were longing for a better country-a heavenly one. Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing:  Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing O to grace how great a debtor, Daily I’m constrained to be! Let Thy goodness, like a fetter, Bind my wandering heart to Thee. What should our goal as a church be?:  What About the Next 10 Years? What should our goal as a church be? Growth "Sir," they said, "from now on give us this bread." Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty…."I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.… On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?"…From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. - John 6:34-66 What About the Next 10 Years? Growth Health While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick . But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." - Matthew 9:10-13 We’ve been taught that we are the center of the universe, and we evaluate everything on its ability to meet our needs. Some of the best communicators of the Scriptures who I know have had people leave their churches for the express reason that they’re not being fed. I know that we are the sheep of God, and sheep require the Shepherd to feed them, but there must come a time when we become shepherds who feed others. Is it really all about us being fed? I think it might be important to remember that over 6o percent of Americans are overweight or even obese. Is it possible that this is also true in the arena of personal spirituality? Are we too much about us getting fed and too little about us exercising our faith? Erwin McManus An Unstoppable Force It was he who gave some to be apostles,… prophets,…evangelists, and…pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. - Ephesians 4:11-13 The testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. - James 1:3-4 What About the Next 10 Years? Growth Health Mission The Church of Jesus Christ is one of the only human institutions that exists for the benefit of non-members Slide21:  The Church of Jesus Christ is one of the only human institutions that exists for the benefit of non-members Philippians 1:20-26 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me. Slide22:  The Church of Jesus Christ is one of the only human institutions that exists for the benefit of non-members Matthew 28:18-20 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Slide23:  The Church of Jesus Christ is one of the only human institutions that exists for the benefit of non-members Acts 1:6-8 So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Slide24:  The Church of Jesus Christ is one of the only human institutions that exists for the benefit of non-members John 20:19-21 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. - Mark 10:45 With that one command Jesus announced two thousand years of direction for the church, still in effect for the churches of today – even your church. He proclaimed that we are sent. The church is, and you are individually, God’s missionary to the world. Your church is God’s instrument to reach the world, and it includes reaching your community. We are sent ton mission by God. We are to be a missional church by calling, nature, and choice. We are called to be on mission in our community. We have been sent to be on mission in our context, and we must accept that call, that directive to be on mission where God has placed us – not five, not fifty, not five hundred years ago and not thirty miles away, not three hundred miles away, not three thousand miles away. We are exhorted to be on mission where God has place us now. The heart of God is to serve a broken world. When Jesus wrapped a towel around His waist, He reminded us that only He could wash away our sin. The church cannot live when the heart of God is not beating within her. God’s heartbeat is to seek and save that which is lost. The church exists to serve as the body of Christ, and it is through this commitment to serve that we are forced to engage our culture. The serving that we are called to requires direct contact. You cannot wash the feet of a dirty world if you refuse to touch it. There is a sense of mystery to this, but it is in the serving that the church finds her strength. :  The life of the church is the heart of God. The heart of God is to serve a broken world. When we stopped calling youth to the mission of Christ, Youth With a Mission emerged. When we ignored the opportunity to reach university students, Campus Crusade emerged. When we settled for church attendance and neglected discipleship, Navigators emerged. When we hesitated to call men to the role of spiritual leadership, Promise Keepers emerged. Yet while the parachurch was rallying and mobilizing men and women whose hearts were longing to serve Christ, it was at the same time accelerating the spiritual anemia and decline of the local church. :  In many ways the emergence of the parachurch reflects the paralysis within the local church.
