“BEFORE HIS GLORIOUS PRESENCE”: “BEFORE HIS GLORIOUS PRESENCE” Jude 1:24 To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— WHAT ABOUT THE MINISTRY OF DRAMA?: WHAT ABOUT THE MINISTRY OF DRAMA? Should the church be involved in drama ministries? Or should the arts be totally disconnected with the church? This is the question the church has been wrestling with for centuries and a question that needs to be answered. Unfortunately this is not a black or white issue, there is a fine line for the arts in the church. On the one hand, art can become an idol in the church and take the focus off of God, but art can also draw people to a deeper worship of God. Each time an art piece is created whether it be music, drama, or something else we should ask ourselves, “Is this giving glory to ourselves, the art piece or to God?” If the arts are not used to bring glory to God than they should not be used in the church at all. Suspicion: Suspicion People are suspicious of plays often because of what is perceived as the world’s influence on plays. They think that if the world does it the church wants to imitate it. “The theater has long had an unsavory reputation for immorality; so too cinema, with its dubious connections to perceived Hollywood decadence. We gravitate toward what is familiar, popular, or commercial, with little regard for the enduring values of artistic excellence.” Why not since we are doing it unconsciously do it consciously and do it to the best of our abilities. DRAMA AS A TOOL: DRAMA AS A TOOL Christian drama is not an end in itself, but a valuable tool which has been used throughout church history to tell the greatest story ever told. The impact Christian drama makes on a church is basically two-fold: drama touches those both inside and outside the church. The simple message of a powerful drama anointed by the Holy Spirit can touch lives with the gospel. An outsider may be more willing to visit a church to view a dramatic presentation than simply to hear a sermon and may even justify attendance in order to see a friend or relative perform. This has become one of our most fruitful forms, and every dramatic presentation should include an invitation to the unsaved to respond to Jesus Christ. HEALING & GROWING FROM WITHIN: HEALING & GROWING FROM WITHIN Drama also makes an impact by providing another opportunity for laypeople to become involved in ministry. Certainly those with musical talents or with great gifts to teach have no problem finding a place to function in the church. By adding an active drama ministry, a church can find a place of service for those with varied talents and skills, such as building props and sets, operating spotlights, designing and making costumes, creating special effects, and applying stage makeup. Willing servants with hidden abilities sit in our pews every Sunday just waiting to be discovered. And even those who claim stage fright can find a place of importance in the production of Christian drama to reach the community. OUTREACH: OUTREACH Drama also benefits church outreach by becoming a unique ministry outreach to the community. Every year churches give choir concerts, seminars, and seasonal presentations. Each one advertises to the community–each expects Christians to flock to hear more of the same. A church committed to drama in more than a seasonal context, however, becomes known in the community as a progressive, evangelistic, apostolic, congregation with something new and exciting to offer. An active drama ministry in a church underlines our reputation as alive, exciting, and serious about reaching people. PowerPoint Presentation: As the final harvest approaches, we are compelled to use whatever means are available to tell the world about Jesus. Christian drama is one of those ways. Why drama? Because Christian drama is not just entertainment–drama can be part of the five fold ministries. Let us go then: “BEFORE HIS GLORIOUS PRESENCE”
