Who is Ant Babajee? • Grew up in Somerset • Studied German and history as well as broadcast journalism at university • Worked in local TV for a year • Launched the BBC website for Somerset and worked for the Beeb for five years

My HIV story • Diagnosed in Somerset in January 2007 – about three months after seroconversion • Accessed Terrence Higgins Trust newly diagnosed group in London in 2008 • Started meds (ARVs) in April 2010 – undetectable in six months • Started volunteering with THT in September 2010 • Became moderator on myHIV community forum in January 2011 • Grew in confidence around my positive status – time to use my media skills

UK-CAB • UK Community Advisory Board • Network of HIV treatment advocates from across the UK • Expert training on current treatment issues and opportunities to meet with doctors, researchers and pharmaceutical companies • Community representation in clinical trials and setting standards of care – eg: BHIVA treatment guidelines • Nearly 600 members from over 120 organisations

Terrence Higgins Trust trustee • Stood for election in October 2013 • Elected for a three-year term at THT’s annual general meeting in November 2013 • Unpaid position but big responsibility • Tasked with raising the profile of volunteers inside and outside THT

Talking to the media • Make it easy for journalists – if you make a commitment, please keep it • Tight deadlines and lots of pressure • Journalists generally want to get it right • What are the key points I want to get across? • Answer the question as you want to answer it • Bridging techniques for difficult questions • Say no with a smile • Think about the target audience of the media outlet • Know your subject – you are the expert

Some final thoughts • Facebook: people you know • Twitter: people you’d like to know • Publication online and boundaries – think before you post • The power of hashtags • Links from other sites – creating a buzz • You can contribute a little or a lot – it’s up to you, but everything makes a difference • Activism can be a lonely experience and there’s strength in numbers
