Three steps forward, two steps back. Hardware, software and liveware – migrating accessibility barriers… Unlocking Potential
Who is TechDis • JISC funded (ie free to post-16 UK education) • But all our resources are freely available online anyway. • Remit is to provide advice and guidance on use of technology to support disabled learners and staff. Unlocking Potential
The leveller -1 When I see piles of different pieces of paper, which I have to fill in, I suddenly become very demotivated because, for me, it is a chore to ask someone to help me. I cannot do it at my own speed. However, my UCAS application was done in a flash, as I did not have to wait for anyone to help me. Unlocking Potential
The leveller - 2 .. some people have trouble understanding me and therefore get nervous and avoid talking to me because they are embarrassed. E- mail ….has helped me to get over that barrier, and has allowed me to say what I want to say showing people who don't know me, or who are nervous about speaking to me, what I’m really about!. Unlocking Potential
A universe of levelling. Dyslexic, deaf, blind, paralysed, learning difficulties, limited speech, limited muscle control? Unlimited achievements. Unlocking Potential
Ignorance and unlevelling • The curse of Unskimmable Documents… • The picture worth no words at all…. • The pointless PowerPoints. • The needless scrollers. • The long ears of the law. Unlocking Potential
Old habits hardly dying. • TechDis research for Senior Manager Briefings: Less than 60% surveyed had a DES online. Two thirds of the statements were in PDF format with most of the remainder in Microsoft® Word. % PDFs with bookmark navigation – 0 % DESs with advice on accessibility - 0 Unlocking Potential
New beginnings Adapted training? • Audience not author. • Personal not corporate. • Empowering not assuming. Unlocking Potential
