So, before we talk about what you shouldn’t eat. Let’s start our discussion with some basics on what’s in the foods we eat and why we need them to keep our bodies running! For more information, go to Slide 4: What is a nutrient? Nutrient: a substance that an organism must obtain from its surroundings for growth and the sustenance of life. Nutrients include the following: Carbohydrates. Fats. Proteins. Vitamins. Water. Minerals as well as oxygen. For more information, go to Slide 5: Protein Builds, maintains and repairs body tissues. Creates the following: Enzymes Hormones Antibodies Assists in the transportation of fats, vitamins and minerals. Protein is contained in every part of your body. Common Sources: Poultry, Beef and Pork Fish and seafood Dairy products Eggs For more information, go to Slide 6: Provide energy Build cell membranes Help regulate hormonal body processes Carry vitamins Keep your body insulated. For more information, go to Fats Slide 7: Are our main source of energy. The main building blocks of carbohydrates are sugars. Sugars are made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Commonly found in pasta, bread, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. For more information, go to Carbohydrates Slide 8: Vitamins Key to normal body processes. Cause reactions in the body. Can’t create vitamin molecules. Must come from the food you eat or supplements. Need at least 13 different vitamins. Common examples are Vitamin D, B Complex and Vitamin C. The 2 classes of Vitamins are: Water soluble –They are soluble in water readily excreted from the body. Fat Soluble – vitamins that need the help of fats to be utilized by the body. They utilize lipids in the intestinal tract, where they are absorbed. For more information, go to Slide 9: Minerals Inorganic substances make up the substance of your body. Minerals build your bones, skin, tissues, teeth, etc. Minerals are the “rocks” that build our bodies. Minerals are also necessary for reactions in your body. They usually come from the earth. Commonly found in milk and sunflower seeds. The 14 or more essential minerals necessary for health include: calcium, chromium, copper, fluorine, iodine, iron, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, sodium and zinc. For more information, go to Slide 10: Phytochemicals Phytochemicals are natural compounds. Found in fruits, vegetables and other plants. They are substances that don't fall within any other categories. They are not vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, fats or minerals. Phytochemicals are beneficial to our health, usually with lots of antioxidant properties. Antioxidants protect your body against free radicals.
