Baboons : Baboons The Tree Climbers of the Jungle          By: Connor and Mary Claire Slide 2: Why did we pick this Animal? We picked this animal because we wanted learn more about baboons and their habitat. Also,  we once heard a weird story about baboons and so that is what made us want to learn more about them. Description : Description Adaptations : Adaptations Baboons have a whole lot of fur around their neck that keeps them warm in the cooler weather.  They can store their food in their cheek pouches They use their hands to get food, groom, and protect themselves Slide 5: Baboons are a type of large monkey.  They have a large head and  long sharp teeth  Male baboons are much larger than the females They have pinkish butts They also are warm blooded vertebrate animals. Description Habitat : Habitat Habitat : Habitat Baboons are found in surprisingly varied habitats and are extremely adaptable.  The two most common baboons can be found in East Africa They require a water source and safe sleeping places in either tall trees or on cliff faces. Temperatures : Temperatures The baboon's climate is very warm  The live in social groups and if it gets cool they get warmth from each other. Water : Water Baboons need water in order to survive They can be found near fresh water sources Those can be river, lakes, streams or ponds When water is readily available, baboons drink every day or two But they can survive for long periods by licking the night dew from their fur. Plant Life : Plant Life Baboons live in areas with lots of plants because they need them to survive. For example, baboons live in trees because they eat the leaves from the branches and swing from tree to tree.  They also live in the grass lands. Animal Life : Animal Life Other animals that can be found in a baboon's habitat are fish, shellfish, hares, birds, vervet monkeys and young, small antelopes. Larger animals in the baboon's environment are cheetah and leopards. Humans can also be found in a baboon's environment. SENSORY ORGANS     Hear, Taste, Touch, Smell, See : SENSORY ORGANS     Hear, Taste, Touch, Smell, See Sight : Sight The baboons eyesight is very good. They use their eyes to look for food, take care of their young, and search the area for predators. Smell : Smell Baboons have an extremly good sense of smell.   They use their sense of smell to locate food and sense approaching predators. Hearing : Hearing A baboon's hearing is also very good.   Their pointed ears are angled forward when a noise is heard   They use their hearing to listen for their young crying and to sense approaching predators. Taste : Taste They use their sense of taste to determine if something is poisonous or harmful to them or their babies. Also they have food likes, and food dislikes. Touch : Touch Baboons like to have a lot of contact with each other They use their hands to groom They use their hands to find food They also use their hands to care for their young You will often find them near and touching other baboons Food and Life Cycles : Food and Life Cycles Life Cycles : Life Cycles Baboons are born live For the first month, an infant baboon stays in very close contact with its mother. By the time the young baboon is 5 to 6 weeks old it can ride on her back. Between 4 and 6 months the young baboon begins to spend most of its time with other juveniles.
