Working under an elevated load presents numerous challenges and risks. However, with appropriate controls in place, risk can be minimised. Providing a safe work environment not only protects employees, but it protects employers from non-compliance fines.

However, with appropriate controls in place, risk can be minimised. Providing a safe work environment not only protects employees, but it protects employers from non- compliance fines.

Hazard warning www.thedetaildevils.com.au © Copyright 2013 The Detail Devils ® • In an effort to improve the work health and safety culture among motor vehicle mechanics, Safework Australia recently issued a hazard warning after a worker was killed when a vehicle axle assembly fell. • In this particular case, the vehicle was elevated just enough to allow the worker to lie underneath. The axle was not correctly supported and became dislodged, falling and crushing the worker. • In addition to not properly supporting the axle, Safework also found that an outside vibration source may have caused the axle to move. Worker positioning and not following the correct assembly sequence were also listed as contributing to the fatal injury.

Prevention The most important step is to ensure that any elevated vehicle is supported by an appropriate stand or hoist. Never work under an unsecured load. Additionally, consider the following: Use special supports. o In addition to hoists and stands, consider using special cradles or supports. o Some vehicle parts are too heavy or large to be safely removed and re-installed. o Using additional supports can minimise the risk to the worker. o Be aware of risks that may require additional restraints. For example, a vehicle subject to vibration will have parts that can dislodge unexpectedly. www.thedetaildevils.com.au © Copyright 2013 The Detail Devils ®

Prevention Follow Procedure o Don't skip any steps. o Frequently performing the same task seems redundant. However, it saves lives. o For example, mark all supports and hoists with their working load capacity and perform a hazard identification and risk assessment for every job. Train and educate employees o Having safe work procedures in place is worthless if employees do not understand the importance of following them. o Have designated work times to provide training and require that all employees attend, and read and sign the procedures. www.thedetaildevils.com.au © Copyright 2013 The Detail Devils ®
