What is covered today 1. What is Augmented Reality? 2. Examples of AR in education. 3. Which AR system? 4. The future of AR in education. 5. Jisc-related links 6. Let’s get creating AR! 7. Questions

What is Augmented Reality? AR is used to: » Reveal new layers of information/media » Add sound/sights/graphics to the physical world What other technology is being created? Google Glass : But what’s it like using this device? Hologram technology?

Examples of AR in education Various examples of AR being used in education: SCARLET – developed through The University of Manchester Library, University of Sussex and the Craft Study Centre at the University for the Creative Arts. Lots of Jisc funded activity going on, including…. Kendal College AR enabled prospectus: LivingLeARning Materials: Unlocking the Hidden Curriculum-University of Exeter CARE (Creating Augmented Reality in Education)-City University London

Further case studies-links CARE (Creating Augmented Reality in Education)-City University London The Health CARE project is currently a short term JISC* funded project being delivered by City University London. As part of the project we’ll be looking at how Augmented Reality(AR) can be used to enhance teaching and learning for students in the School of Health Sciences. South Staffordshire College: The bricklaying team at the college produced their own videos which have improved the number of trainees cutting bricks right first time from around 40% to a staggering 90%. Think what this can save in terms of cost on this course. Kendal College: The 2012 prospectus featuring augmented reality:

Which AR system? Unfortunately there are many different systems to choose from and depending on what you need this can become expensive. Here are a list of some of the current AR players 1. Aurasma 2. Layar 3. Junaio 4. Augment 5. String 6. Onvert There are many more! software “Ahhhh all these AR apps, I just can’t decide – think I’ll play Angry Birds instead.

Which AR system? »Experiment and investigate »Check if AR is time constrained »Check the potential costs and services »Can you achieve the same result using QR codes or other free technology? “With my new AR I’ve created a robot which does all my chores for me”

The future of AR in education? 1- Is there a pedagogic rationale? Do we let the tail wag the dog? Remember when Second Life was the Future of Education?! 2- Multiple apps • A lot of different apps, this can be confusing • As technology grows, companies stop their free-to-use policy • Is there value in developing branded apps? • Will Google Glass, hologram technology take over? 3- Materials development Is there scope for an educational repository of AR resources? 71% of 16-24 year olds in the UK now own a “Smart” phone (i.e. a device capable of processing Augmented Reality):

The future of AR in education? AR without Handheld accessories? Using Kinect as an AR tool (Microsoft XBOX accessory): Xbox 360 with Kinect at Cumbernauld College

Jisc-related links Jisc Inform article about AR Pedagogical arguments for Augmented Reality as an educational tool Augmented reality in education: teaching tool or passing trend? Jisc have funded work on: Two types of Technology: • Marker Based (Triggered by QR code/visual image • Marker less (e.g. GPS calibrated)

Let’s get creating!

Let’s get creating! »Using your iOS or Android device please search for ‘HP Live Photo’ and install the app »Using a smart device record a video, which can be anything – but think of how it could relate to educational use “I may be small, but I reckon this will sell for at least £1,000,000” – by janetmck

Let’s get creating! » Once you have the video open the HP Live Photo application, if you have any prompts for help scroll past these until you see the image (right) » Click on ‘Create a Live Photo’ » Select a video and find the video you recorded and proceed » Select one of the scanned images » Hit select and choose a template » When satisfied select ‘Save’ » Email yourself the completed AR » Now select the view menu and scan the attached photo from the email and watch what happens. Note: Once AR content is created it can’t be deleted or edited in HP Live Photo

Questions? There are other AR environments, try out Layar and Aurasma Both of these systems allow you to create AR content, Layar is easy to use, but the free account is restricted to 60 days for AR content.
