KAYODE CROWN 1 ASSURANCE Judges 6:39: Then Gideon said to God, “Let not your anger burn against me; let me speak just once more. Please let me test just once more with the fleece. Please let it be dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground let there be dew.” Gideon was not sure if he should embark on the process of rescuing Israel or not. He had encountered God, but when alone, he had this nagging sense of inadequacy, and he needed more assurance from God. To that end he made certain requests of God, like the one in the focus verse, so that he can be more than doubly sure that God was with him. That will help him to wrap his mind around moving on to the battle as God has charged him (Judges 6). We all need assurance. It is never the will of God that we move with a sense of uncertainty, because that is not who God is. God is not uncertain and His children should not be otherwise; and assurance gives stability. Salvation God wants you to have the assurance of salvation. We cannot move far with Him without that. You cannot be sure-footed in your spiritual journey 4
ASSURANCE if you do not have in your feet the preparation of the gospel of peace, which is the surefootedness of being saved (Ephesians 6:13-15). We can’t keep looking behind our backs, and at the same time make real progress. When the wife of Lot looked behind her at the time angels of God drove her family from Sodom before its destruction with Gomorrah, she became pillar of salt. She became immobilised (Genesis 19:15-26). You spiritual life will likewise be immobilised without the assurance of salvation; that forward looking sense of going somewhere with God. We need the assurance of salvation, which the writer of the book of Hebrews described as an anchor of the soul that goes into the holy of holies (Hebrews 6:11-19). It is the assurance of salvation that makes us able to draw close to God with boldness as we should. You will not be able to draw near to God without the assurance that you are saved. And the basis of that assurance is the word of God, not feeling. The only assurance that Abraham had that what God promised to him will come to pass was His word. The bible says Abraham believed God and that was accounted to him for righteousness (Galatians 3:6). That means he was changed because he believed. May we never come to a time in the church where the simple act of expression of faith to be saved through answering an altar call, repeating a confession of faith, as a means of experiencing salvation will become out of fashion, replaced by certain observances as a means of salvation. When Jesus was asked: what must I do that I may do the works of God (John 6:28-29)? The eternal answer he gave was: believe in the one he has sent. That is all there is to be saved and an assurance is based on that. It is based on believing such scriptures as: for God so loved the world that whoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16); if you believe in Jesus, you have passed from death to life (John 5:24); whoever call upon the Lord shall be saved and others like them (Romans 10:13). Philip ministered to the Ethiopian Eunuch, from the book of Isaiah, chapter 53 (Acts 8:26-39). And after a while, the man said that he wants to be baptised in water, which only a believer in Jesus should do. The only 5
KAYODE CROWN question that Philip asked him was: do you believe with all your heart? To which he answered: I believe that Jesus is the Son of God. That qualified him to be a citizen of heaven and can be assured in his heart that he has passed from death into life. He actually went on rejoicing, assured of salvation (Luke 10:20). The thief crucified on the right hand of Jesus had assurance from the words of Jesus that he would be saved. He did not receive the assurance of salvation from Jesus because he behaved nicely in his lifetime but because he verbally expressed faith in Jesus (Luke 23:43). Baptism in the Holy Spirit What about the assurance that you have been baptised in the Holy Spirit? Let’s ask Peter based on his experience in the house of Cornelius (Acts 10). Cornelius and his household were gentiles, full-blown ones for that matter. That, according to the preconceived notion of Peter, disqualified them from knowing the true God, the father of our lord Jesus Christ. But the Holy Spirit “forced” him to minister the word to them. While he was talking to the household of Cornelius about Jesus in the tenth chapter of the book of Acts, the heaven opened and the people experienced the baptism of the Holy Spirit similar to what Peter himself experienced in the second chapter of the book of Acts (Acts 2:1-4). They began to speak in tongues, right in the middle of the sermon being presented by Peter. That was the assurance that Peter had that truly these people have received the baptism of the Holy Spirit just as he did. That is the only assurance of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit there is. It is the biblical common denominator. Who to marry What about the assurance that you are with the right person to marry? Sorry I cannot help with that, but I can give you general guidelines. The bible says that as many as are led by the Holy Spirit they are the sons of God (Romans 8:14). You want to be sure that you are being led by God in the decision you have made concerning who to marry. You should not allow your flesh, or social standards to guide you. Note that we are told not to conform to this world but be transformed by 6
ASSURANCE the renewal of your mind (Romans 12:1-2). Beyond the choice you are making concerning who you want to marry, are the choices you are making to change in who you are. You need changes to occur within you because it is the right person that can choose the right person. You also need to know that there are red lines that should not be crossed in the kind of spiritual quality of the person you should marry. Understand that there is nothing that will sustain your marriage like the sense that you are in the will of God. It spurs you to want to do your best in every situation. You need to have a commitment to the things of God and to continuous transformation to be able make the right choice in marriage. And I am not talking about seeing visions or revelations concerning the person to marry. It is about having enough mental, spiritual and emotional maturity to make the right choice, so I repeat, the best investment to making the right choice is to be the right person yourself; it is to be a learner in spiritual and mental disposition, not being overly set in your ways, which is a prerequisite for increasing spiritual growth and emotional maturity. Life’s pursuit What about assurance that you are doing the right job, or involved in the right spiritual service? The number one question is: do you feel a sense of grace or struggle (1Peter 4:10-11)? Spiritual service should be about God flowing through and not you trying to make things happen. The right job is that which appropriately channels of the gift of God resident in you. Buy book Amazon kindle Paperback Apple/kobo/nook 7
