The core idea of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is to shift emphasis from posture to breath, and therefore to realize that postures, like all forms, are impermanent, they come and go. The quest of yoga is for formless consciousness. Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a meditation on impermanence. The only thing permanent in this practice is the constant focus on the breath. PowerPoint Presentation: FUNDAMENTALS OF ASHTANGA YOGA In the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga system, the body is used as a mantra. The postures represent beads and the 3 fundamental techniques form the string that holds the beads together to create a garland of yoga postures. The system is designed to work as a movement meditation where the transition from each posture to the next is as important as the posture itself. Once the fundamental techniques are mastered the practice will happen almost effortlessly. Without them it becomes hard work. These techniques are Ujjayi Pranayama , Drishti and Bandhas . In this way the practice becomes deeply internal and meditative and provides us with constant feedback about whether we are in Dharana (state of focused mind) or not. PowerPoint Presentation: THE IMPORTANCE OF ALIGNMENT Let's start with the definition of asana: It is a posture which involves thoughtful process at the end of which a balance is achieved between movement and resistance. Weight has to be distributed over muscles, bones and joints just as your intelligence must be engaged at every level. You have to create space in your muscles and your skin fitting the energy network of your entire body in the asana. This helps the organs of perception (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin) to discern the subtlety of each movement. This unity between the organ of actions and organs of perception occurs when the student reaches a subjective understanding of an asana and begins through instinct as well as knowledge to adjust their movements correctly.
