Excerpts from The Catholic Lectionary. 2009. Bellingham, WA: Logos Bible Software.
3 Have mercy on me, God, in your goodness; in your abundant compassion blot out my offense. 4 Wash away all my guilt; from my sin cleanse me. 5 For I know my offense; my sin is always before me. 6 Against you alone have I sinned; I have done such evil in your sight That you are just in your sentence, blameless when you condemn.
12 A clean heart create for me, God; renew in me a steadfast spirit. 13 Do not drive me from your presence, nor take from me your holy spirit. 14 Restore my joy in your salvation; sustain in me a willing spirit. 17 Lord, open my lips; my mouth will proclaim your praise.
David’s Sin David’s sin of adultery with Bathsheba (2 Sam. 11), caused him to violate several of the Ten Commandments. We should be comforted by the fact that David’s sins were forgiven, which means that our sins may also be forgiven if we have the courage to follow David’s Example. Recognize our sins and have the willingness to enter the confessional seeking forgiveness Nathan the prophet confronted David with his sin. David uses this psalm as a way not only to confess but more importantly to ask God’s forgiveness.
Welcoming The message of the psalm is that the worst offender among God’s people can appeal to God for forgiveness, for moral restoration, and for the resumption of a joyful life if he comes to God in humility and bases his request for forgiveness on God’s compassion and grace. Like the story of the Prodigal Son, God’s arms are always open. Open to welcome you back into His family.
