State History : State History First Inhabitants The main Native American tribes in the Arkansas area were the Osage and Caddo people. Exploration The first European explorer in Arkansas was Hernando de Soto in 1541. Settlement In 1686 French explorers built the Arkansas post. State History, continued : State History, continued Territorial Days In 1803 America purchased Arkansas as a part of the Louisiana Purchase. Many people came work at logging camps. Statehood : This state became the 25th state in the United States in 1803. The first Governor of the state was James Sevier Conway. Statehood Government : Government National Government Mark Pryor and Blanche Lincoln. The representatives Marion Berry , Mike Ross and Vic Snyder. State Government The current Arkansas governor is Mike Beebe. Minerals Petroleum soft and hard coal natural gas and gemstones are all common minerals in Arkansas. The best part is you get to keep anything you find. Famous People : Famous People William (Bill )Clinton was both Arkansas governor and president of the United States of America. Scottie Pippen played professional basket ball from 1987 – 2004. Maya Angelou is a famous poet who won two Grammies for best spoken or non music album. State Motto : State Motto The original motto was Regnat Populi (The People Rules) but in 1909 it was changed to Regnat Populus (The People Rule).
