Arizona Reservation Ministries ‘God’s ARMs around the Reservation’ Volume 12 Issue 1February, 2014 Christmas Gratitude! As Thanksgiving passed, and the excitement and plans of Christmas unfolded and the ARM team had much to keep them busy…and keep them excited. Quite honestly, the scope of our Christmas Stocking and Fleece Blanket projects has grown far larger than mere humans could embrace alone. Picture our large room at the ARM’s offices, where we gather for meetings, lined with large tables and opaque tubs filled with toothbrushes, crayons and baby dolls. Lists are created, checked, recreated. Our team heads to the urban area of Phoenix/Mesa to shop for the things we still lack, and then the “stuffing” begins. Countless hours go into this project. Countless prayers do as well. To those who lovingly stitched our Christmas stockings, “Thank you.” To those who generously gave funds, gift cards, or items that were tucked within, we also voice our deepest gratitude. The bin containing the stitched stockings was approx. 200 short of what we thought we’d need. Upon opening that bin the morning of our final stocking stuffing, 65 stockings were visible where less than five were the night before! Those who counted the fleece blankets counted less than 400. God multiplied the stockings, supplies and fleece blankets so that over 550 were blessed because of your generosity! Besides the stockings we were able to distribute, other items were given to the Tribe’s Wellness Center for their Christmas celebrations, and also a church as an Apache evangelist delivered those items for their gathering as well! This annual event is eagerly anticipated by so many on the San Carlos Apache Reservation! Some still have their first stocking from years ago! Although this project is too large for this ARM Team, it is obviously manageable for our mighty King! We wanted to share our praise of HIS power as another Christmas has blessed so many. Along with our Christmas Stocking stuffing, a group of volunteers visits each year to also stuff our year-end letter and Christmas card. This year’s letter, written by ARM’s Executive Director shared the great need we have for reliable vehicles. It has been many years since obtaining our current vehicles, all but one graciously donated by partners as God provides. ARM’s 15-passenger van starts when it feels like it. Transporting a large crowd from one neighborhood to the one the Church Bus visits each Thursday as well as many other trips, etc., this van is critical to our ministry. Because of the donations of many, we were able to purchase a nearly-new 15-passenger van in time for our Stocking distribution! We are still in need of a new Church Bus. Our current bus is 22 years old and has driven over 300,000 miles. We pray it will continue until the Lord provides a new one. Please pray for this need and for wisdom as we plan how to transform it into a new Church Bus.

Fall Carnival calls the Faithful God’s ARMs : Your ARMs Activity within Arizona Reservation Ministries continues year-round! We are so thankful for the opportunities God reveals, on a daily basis, for us to share His love and His words of hope on this Reservation! We have been blessed to serve those who lead the San Carlos Apache Tribe’s Wellness Center for many years. This agency teaches parenting classes and classes for special-needs adults, facilitates in drug and alcohol recovery, and so much more! One activity we get to help with is their annual Fall Carnival. Held each year just before Halloween, we park our Church Bus on the one main street of San Carlos, adding our games, popcorn, spin-art and hearts to those of other agencies. Estimates of over 1,200 Apache tribal members attend this grand event, making memories with their children and grandchildren. For nearly three hours one evening, we get to laugh with, hug and even at times pray with those who join in the festivities. Prizes are gathered; candy for the bean bag toss and basketball toss from the hoop attached to the back of the bus, Bibles and small tracts for another game, paint and other supplies are purchased so that children and adults create their spin-artwork. Coloring pages are printed encouraging praying, and their own relationship with the One that will always love them. This evening requires much planning and preparation, but we are confident that even something as simple as a Fall Carnival can change someone’s life forever. That’s the purpose of ARM. We exist to provide “God’s ARMs around the Reservation.” Tucked within each Christmas stocking was a page telling the recipients and others who would see, “what’s so great about Christmas.” The other side of this page simply tells with scripture how THEY can receive the greatest gift, the Gift of Jesus Christ. Posters were hung near where the stockings were distributed stating, “A Stocking is for now. Jesus is forever.” At the Wellness Center’s Fall Carnival, the priority is to share Christ’s love both in action and in word. A game’s purpose is to encourage those of all ages to choose Christ, and then to persevere for Him. Many Bibles are earned and then read as a result of this event. Weekly visits in four neighborhoods with our Church Bus to share about Christ, weekly visits at the Tribe’s assisted living facility to share in Bible Study, construction on a sanctuary for a growing Apache-led congregation, and completing four homes, conversations, prayers, hugs are shared along with food, clothing and more. The ARM team shares God’s ARMs often! When volunteers arrive, their ARMs are added to ours to lighten the load, and to increase the outcome. We thank God for the ARM team, and for those He sends for a season as well. God’s ARMs around the Reservation

Mike and Nia Armenta have been serving the Lord as Sunday School teachers on the Reservation for quite awhile. They have been a great help as volunteers on ARM’s Church Bus, with 70-100 children and teens, Thursday afternoons for over a year. After much prayer, in December, ARM’s Children’s Minister, Faye Hinton and one of ARM’s Executive Directors, Diana Lawrence met with the Armentas to ask if they might be interested in joining the ARM Team. Already, they are taking turns with the other Church Bus Team members teaching lessons, preparing crafts, planning and presenting games etc. Their two sons, Michael, Jr. (aka Javier) and Carlos (aka Jo-Jo) are also precious additions to our growing ARM family. For now, the salary they receive comes from ARM’s general funds. We would love for you to begin to partner with Mike and Nia! If interested, please send any funds to ARM, noted that you wish to designate it for them. We would also appreciate a message letting us know whether the gift is “one-time” or you would like to begin supporting the Armentas on a monthly basis. ARM’s general budget pays utilities, insurances, construction costs and salaries for team members until they are able to raise an adequate amount to cover their expenses. Any assistance you can provide is an answer to prayer! Globe, Arizona and the San Carlos Apache Reservation are located in the “high desert” of Arizona. Temperatures are typically ten degrees cooler than the Phoenix area, and much warmer than most of the US. We are so thankful for the group that joined us this past quarter from 1st Christian Church in Phoenix to help with the Christmas stocking and envelope stuffing! As this is written, we are excited about the arrival of a group from Stoneridge Church in Yuma AZ in February! Several groups are already on the Ministry Calendar for 2014! Please pray about joining us in such a practical partnership! Simply click on “Ways to Share” on our home page, scrolling to “mission trips” and then printing our 2014 Short Term Ministry Packet. Any questions remaining after looking that over, please feel free to call or email us! The calendar on our web site is updated regularly, but might not be up-to-date when you review it, so please contact us even if your chosen date seems to be filled. Again, we thank God for those He sends, and are praying perhaps you might be part of that provision! Already in 2014, ARM representatives have been blessed to personally share with three churches about the needs of their San Carlos Apache brothers and sisters, and what God is doing through Arizona Reservation Ministries. This is second-best to visiting and seeing first-hand how MUCH your prayers are needed by participating in a Prayer Journey of the Reservation. If interested in inviting someone from ARM to share with you, or to plan a visit to pray through the Reservation with an ARM Team member, please call or email today. A New Family joins ARM’s family Short Term Ministers Looking for a way to serve for longer than a week, but shorter than the rest of your life? We Need YOU! Vehicles were needed but had mechanical repairs also needing special funds. These bills all paid! AND… we were able to purchase a nearly-new 15-passenger van prior to our Christmas Stocking Distribution. Thank you!
