Adapted Recreation:  Adapted Recreation A program within ECU’s Department of Campus Recreation & Wellness Adapted Recreation Is… :  Adapted Recreation Is… A program for individuals with and without disabilities on ECU’s campus and in the community. An INCLUSIVE program. A participant in a collaborative relationship with the Support Team for Active Recreation (STAR) and the Walker Center’s Adaptive Recreation program. What is Adapted Recreation about?:  What is Adapted Recreation about? Philosophy To provide individuals with and without disabilities the opportunity for involvement in a unique recreational setting and in turn improve their quality of life. The services are provided in an integrated setting through modified sport and recreation activities. Adapted Recreation Goals:  Adapted Recreation Goals To enhance awareness of recreational opportunities for individuals with physical disabilities. To provide training in physical fitness to enable participants to improve their muscular strength, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility and sports related gross motor abilities. To provide the opportunity for participants to improve their level of physical fitness which enhances functional independence and physical development. To provide opportunities for participants to further develop socially, mentally and emotionally through recreational activities. What we offer:  What we offer The main goal of the Adapted Recreation Program is to allow individuals with disabilities the opportunity and resources to mainstream into recreational activities offered by ECU. What we offer:  What we offer The PAIRS (Partners Assisting in Recreational Services) Program: PAIRS matches an interested person with an experienced partner who facilitates his/her involvement in a chosen recreational or exercise activity. Activities Offered:  Activities Offered Climbing Wall Clinic Kayaking Clinic Hand cycle Workshop Wheelchair Basketball Wheelchair Rugby Wheelchair Hockey Wheelchair Volleyball Climbing Wall:  Climbing Wall Monday-Thursday 3:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Fridays from 3:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m. Sundays from 3:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Goalball:  Goalball This sport emphasizes communication skills and provides the opportunity to experience competition without the use of sight. Hand cycling Workshop:  Hand cycling Workshop Hand cycling is a very popular sport. This form of cycling provides the participant with a great cardiovascular and upper body workout. Wheelchair Basketball/Volleyball/Hockey:  Wheelchair Basketball/Volleyball/Hockey Individuals with and without a disability are encouraged to participate in these events. This is a great opportunity for an upper body workout! Wheelchair Rugby:  Wheelchair Rugby Wheelchair rugby is a bit more physical form of wheelchair basketball. This sport allows for four players on the court at a time, instead of the five players allowed with wheelchair basketball. Collaborative Programs:  Collaborative Programs Water Sports Day Adapted Sports Day Discover Scuba Clinic Active Living Beach Retreat Cultural Arts Workshop Adapted Sports Day:  Adapted Sports Day This is the Adapted Recreation program’s largest event of both semesters. This day provides participants with the opportunity to explore many different sports and activities. Active Living Beach Retreat:  Active Living Beach Retreat Provides the opportunity to experience the outdoors and adapted adventure camping. This event is co-sponsored by STAR, Walker Center and Campus Recreation & Wellness. Cultural Arts Workshop:  Cultural Arts Workshop This workshop provides an atmosphere to learn about and try artistic activities in new ways. This event is usually held in late February. Staff:  Staff David Gaskins, Associate Director - Programs Sandra McGourty, Program Assistant You The Adapted Recreation Program is completely dependent upon volunteers to run a large majority of our programs! How can you get involved?:  How can you get involved? College students need volunteer opportunities for class credit, service clubs, etc. The Adapted Recreation Program needs volunteers for all of the above activities. You can participate while gaining volunteer hours and helping out our program. Adapted Recreation Fall 2007 Calendar:  Adapted Recreation Fall 2007 Calendar Interested?:  Interested? Keep track of your hours on the hour log and at end of semester turn it into the Volunteer and Service-Learning Center in The Old Cafeteria Complex.
