Women’s Preventive Health Branch [now known as Family Planning & Reproductive Health Unit] establishes Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative [TPPI] by TANF Block Grant; NC General Assembly approved $4 mil. 1998-2000 1998 1989 Rep. Luther “Nick” Jeralds and Sen. Marvin Ward co-chaired the Legislative Study Commission on Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention and Sexuality Slide 6: Pioneers in Pregnancy Prevention TEEN Slide 7: NCCAP launches October as Let’s Talk Month with support of Gov. Jim Martin in 1986 Let's Talk Month Throughout the state of NC, communities continue to hold events promoting parent/child communication with the Coalition’s support and guidance Slide 8: Teen Pregnancy Prevention Week NCCAP launches Teen Pregnancy Prevention Week in May 1991 The week became so popular that it became an entire month of awareness and education NCCAP’s observance is the precursor to the National Day coordinated by The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy Slide 9: INSTITUTE Summer Institute for Family Life Education NCCAP and UNC-Charlotte collaborate to provide adolescent sexuality education training for providers, particularly teachers The Institute sends well-equipped persons back into their communities teaching accurate and current information to teens Slide 10: NCCAP changes its name to APPCNC Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Coalition of NC The newsletter changes from “The Network” to “The Advocate” 1994 Slide 11: 1999 Launches Hispanic Outreach Network Launches media campaign “Talk With Your Kids About Sex—Everyone Else Is” Launches new website APPCNC remains on the cutting edge and is a model for other states APPCNC surfs with the best on the new technology wave APPCNC increases presence in the state Slide 12: Adolescent Health Advocacy Day New Policy Teens Count AHAD APPCNC launches AHAD in 2001! Teens, providers and concerned citizens meet in Raleigh or in their communities with legislators During the years AHAD was held at the State Legislative Building [2001, 2003 and 2005], APPCNC lead the coordination of over 700 participants APPNC keeps teens health issues at the forefront Teens have rights!!!
