Anointing of the Sick: Anointing of the Sick Definition:: Definition: Is distinguished from other forms of religious anointing or "unction" (an older term with the same meaning) in that it is intended, as its name indicates, for the benefit of a sick person. “Medicine of God” It is a sacrament of the Catholic Church that is administered to Catholics who because of sickness or old age are in danger of death, even if the danger is not proximate. Importance:: Importance: Anointing of the sick is the final chance to have our sins forgiven before we go to God. The Holy Spirit comes done and gives healing, comfort, courage and peace of mind for the journey ahead. We receive God's grace, his blessing and he welcomes us into eternal life. Extreme Unction:: Extreme Unction: Is another term, very common in past centuries but rarely used today, for one of the seven sacraments, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Unction means an anointing with oil (which is part of the sacrament), and Extreme refers to the fact that the sacrament (at least until recent years) was usually administered in extremity in other words, when the person to whom it was being administered was in grave danger of dying. Why Extreme Unction?: Why Extreme Unction? The name Extreme Unction did not become technical in the West till towards the end of the twelfth century, and has never become current in the East. Some theologians would explain its origin on the ground that this unction was regarded as the last in order of the sacramental or quasi-sacramental unction, being preceded by those of baptism, confirmation, and Holy orders. Biblical Basis / Church Teachings: Biblical Basis / Church Teachings The Church’s ministry to the sick has its foundations first in Jesus’ ministry and in that of the early Church. One can see this expressed in two key biblical passages: Mark 6:13 and James 5:14-15. Mark 6:13: Mark 6:13 “They drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.” Mark 6:13 *This passage speaks of the sending of the apostles by Jesus. Their healing ministry is closely connected to the call to repentance, as is mentioned right before it in verse 12. James 5:14-15: James 5:14-15 “Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint (him) with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.” James 5:14-15 *There are three actions represented in this passage: calling for the priests, prayer over the sick, and anointing them with oil. It also notes two primary effects: saving the sick and raising them up and the forgiveness of any sins. “Raising up” has a double meaning of lifting up from sickness and the resurrection of the body. Effects of the Sacrament of Holy Anointing: Effects of the Sacrament of Holy Anointing Through the sacrament a gift of the Holy Spirit is given, that renews confidence and faith in God and strengthens against temptations to discouragement, despair and anguish at the thought of death and the struggle of death; it prevents the believer from losing Christian hope in God's justice, truth and salvation. Effects:: Effects: the uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ, for his own good and that of the whole Church; the strengthening, peace, and courage to endure in a Christian manner the sufferings of illness or old age; the forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able to obtain it through the sacrament of penance; the restoration of health, if it is conducive to the salvation of his soul; the preparation for passing over to eternal life. Matter and Form:: Matter and Form: It is clear that the matter of this sacrament is blessed oil . Oil of the Sick is the oil used in administering the sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. The matter is olive oil or oil derived from other plants if olive oil is not available. The oil must be blessed. Ordinarily, this is done by the bishop on (or near) Holy Thursday at the Chrism Mass. In extraordinary circumstances, a priest can also perform the blessing of oil within the rite of anointing. Minister:: Minister: The Priest or Bishop is the ordinary minister of the sacrament. The Council of Trent has defined in accordance with the words of St. James that the proper ministers ( proprios ministros ) of this sacrament are the priests of the Church alone, that is bishops or priests ordained by them Recipient:: Recipient: The Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. If a sick person who received this anointing recovers his health, he can in the case of another grave illness receive this sacrament again. It is fitting to receive the Anointing of the Sick just prior to a serious operation. The same holds for the elderly whose frailty becomes more pronounced. Viaticum:: Viaticum: It is a term used especially in the Roman Catholic Church for the Eucharist (communion) administered, with or without anointing of the sick, to a person who is dying, and is thus a part of the last rites. The word “ viaticum ” is a Latin word meaning " provisions for a journey ," from via, or " way “. The Eucharist is seen as the ideal food to strengthen a dying person for the journey from this world to life after death. Film : Film
