Slide1:  Let’s introduce: Moodle created by using information from site Slide2:  moodle (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) an alternative to proprietary commercial online learning solutions, because it is distributed free under open source licensing = an organization has complete access to the source code and can make changes if needed modular design makes it easy to create new courses, adding content that will engage learners easy and intuitive interface for instructors and students, because moodle requires only basic browser skills to begin learning or studying various themes to customize moodle look or possibility to create own 'personalized' look an application which can run on webhosting or user own server Description Slide3:  technical requirements: from web server software - Apache or any web server that supports PHP (IIS on Windows platforms) PHP scripting language (version 4.1.0 or later) working database server MySQL or PostgreSQL our technical parameters Software: OS Windows 2000, MySQL database (Easy PHP 4.4.1 version) Hardware: Pentium 4 (3 GHz), 1 GB DDRAM, 2 x 160 GB hard disks in RAID 1 (to provide data back up and continuous access to courses), 100Mb/s network connection instalation is easy - using instalation guide documentation is well accessible, simple and easy understanding problems are discussed in active forums with many users Technical requirements Slide4:  possible users: Administrator - configuration, controlling all of aspects of the moodle site, administration of courses, users, … Teacher - management of course (content of course (study materials, activities, students in course (controlling their logs, scales, grades…)) Student - access to study materials, doing activities, chat, … Host - access to course (depends on configuration of course) basic management features: courses learners Users and features Slide5:  course: process of creation assigned to the teacher - using Add activities from an intuitive drop-down list of module plug-in features three possible course layout format: Topic - organized organized into topics Weekly - organized into weekly activities Social - organized around single discussion forum course backups made by teacher Course Management Features Slide6:  course - Add… modules: Assignment - used to assign online or offline tasks; learners can submit tasks in any file format (e.g. MS Office, PDF, image, etc.). Course Management Features Chat - allows real-time synchronous communication between course users (teachers (instructors), learners (students)). Choice - instructors create a question and a number if choices for learners; results are posted for learners to view. Dialogue - allows one-to-one asynchronous message exchange between instructor and learner, or learner to learner. Slide7:  course - Add… modules: Forums - threaded discussion boards for asynchronous group exchange on shared subject matter. Glossary - glossary of terms used in a course. Journal - allow learners reflect, record and revise ideas. Label - allows add descriptions with images in any area of the course homepage. Lesson - allows instructor to create and manage a set of linked 'Pages'. Each page can end with a question. Course Management Features Slide8:  course - Add… modules: Quiz - create all the familiar forms of assessment including true-false, multiple choice, short answer, matching question, random questions, numerical questions, embedded answer questions with descriptive text and graphics. Instructors have control in defining course assessments, and can import quiz questions from popular formats like Blackboard, IMS QTI and WebCT. Moodle also supports embedding audio into a quiz. Course Management Features Slide9:  course - Add… modules: Resource - the primary tool for bringing content into a course; may be plain text, uploaded files, links to the web, Wiki or Rich Text (Moodle has built-in text editors) or a bibliography type reference. Survey - this module aids an instructor in making online classes more effective by offering a variety of surveys (COLLES, ATTLS), including critical incident sampling. Workshop - an activity for peer assessment of documents (Word, PP etc.) that students submit online. Participants can assess each other’s project. Teacher makes final student assessment, and can control opening and closing periods. Site, course and user calendar event scheduling. Applying scales to different learner activities. Managing grades. Tracking user access logs. Learners create a personal profile that can include a picture, helping connect students socially in the online learning community. Groups - allows the course instructor to easily create group categories, and determine how members will interact with each other and within various activities. Slide12:  Learner Management Features course - learner management features: Calendar - events in calendar can be created for different categories (color-coded by category), including: Global events that appear in all courses (system admin). Course events set by an instructor. Group events set by instructor relative only to a group. User events set by learner (e.g. due dates, personal etc.). Upcoming Events - alerting the learner across all courses they are enrolled in of different category events. Admin - puts all important learner management functions: settings of the course, Teachers and Students can be manually enrolled or removed from a course. Configuration of course Backup and Restore is achieved on a single screen, Scales, Grades, …. Slide13:  Learner Management Features course - learner management features: Scales - definition of custom Scales to be used for grading Forums, Assignments and Journals. Grades a quick view of all Forum, Assignment, Journal, Quiz, Lesson and Workshop grades. The grading scale applied to a learner’s submission is shown, along with a cumulative total, on a single page. viewing Assignment and Journal submissions, and adding Grades and comments, are done from a single page that displays all enrolled students. Slide14:  Learner Management Features course - learner management features: Logs - monitoring of detailed learner activity - when and what course resources the learner has accessed. Files - all course resources are centrally located within the Files area - they are available when creating new activities. Help - An extensive Moodle Help file is a button click away. Courses include a Teacher only forum, where colleagues can collaborate on tasks and share ideas. Slide15:  Learning course - learning (student’s view): Authentication possible by: own authentication system integration with an external database, POP3, IMAP, LDAP or NNTP, allowing domain wide login Easy navigation provided by: navigation bar - breadcrumb links from course homepage to activities links in course topics sidelong parts - links to possible courses, calendar, upcoming events, other students, … Slide16:  Learning course - learning (student’s view): Enrollment Keys - Instructors can require an 'enrollment key' to allow participation in a class. 24/7/365 Anywhere! - Learners can login any time, anywhere to interact with coursework, and can specify the Time Zone and Language they wish to use. Moodle has interface support for 34 languages. Slide17:  Learning course - learning (student’s view): E-Mail Notification - When learners 'subscribe' to forums they are notified by e-mail of new postings. Additionally, instructors can set e-mail notification for private Dialogues. (There are necessary to configure the post server identification) Slide18:  Experience Experience: moodle is used by over 1150 organizations in 81 countries. This number is growing by about 10% each month as educators and trainers learn the value of implementing open source Moodle.
