Film Posters Genre: Romance

Titanic What do the images tell us? • The image of the two characters suggests the film is a romance. • The position of the two people implies that the male is going after the female. • The boat in the front of the poster relates to the title of the film and tells the audience what the main location for the film is. What information is included to appeal to an audience? • Title • Tagline • The names of two main actors • Other films connected to the director. Is this a successful poster? Yes, it includes the names of two popular actors, as well as including other successful films by the same director. It’s almost saying that if you liked those films you’ll like this one. It’s layout is simple and clear so it would be transferable to DVD cases. Also, the style and colours in the poster are consistent with the film.

Lost In Austen What do the images tell us? • • • The majority of the film is set in the countryside or a rural area. Past and present are mixed together. The book is an important item. What information is included to appeal to an audience? • Title • • • Tagline The names of the main actors and actresses Quotes and opinions on the film Is this a successful poster? Yes, because it gives the audience a reason to watch it by using the quotes from reviews. Even though the style and colours of the poster don’t relate to the film they do make the poster stand out and jump at you, grabbing your attention. It will also appeal to fans of Jane Austen because it hints that it is based on one of her books.

Twilight What do the images tell us? • • • It is about a boy and a girl. The male character is more powerful than the female character. The dark colours suggest that there is evil and negative themes to the film. What information is included to appeal to an audience? • Title • • • The release date Tagline Distribution Company Is this a successful poster? No, there isn’t enough information, you don’t know who the director is, who the actors are, the story or plot. They only thing that hints at what the film could be about is the tagline: “When you can live forever, what do you live for?” However, it does jump out at you because the colours used are so intense and isolated.

What information is included? • Title • Tagline • • The names of the two main actors The release date Is this a successful poster? Yes, it jumps out because the image isn’t one you see everyday and the colours are quite striking. The main male actor is also fairly popular so that adds appeal to the film. The image is transferable to a DVD case, because it is simple and there aren’t any small, intricate details.

Casablanca What do the images tell us? • The main location is a warm place because of the palm leaves and the exotic looking buildings. • A couple are in love, but they aren’t happy. • There is “gangster” type characters in the film. • The planes suggests that the two main characters are separated at some point in the film. What information is included? • Title • The names of the main actors and actresses in the film • The names of the distributor and production company Is this a successful poster? No, the poster doesn’t relate to the film very well because it is film noir. This poster is also too busy and intricate so I don’t think it would transfer to a DV case very well. However, even though it doesn’t have a tagline or contain much information, the images in the poster creates a segmented story and this will make the viewer want to see the full film so they are able to fill in the gaps.

About Time What do the images tell us? • The red dress suggests love and passion. • The laughing characters tell the viewer that the film is a comedy as well as a romance. • The water falling on the characters implies that things do go wrong in the film but that aren’t detrimental to their happiness in the end. A Little Bit of Heaven What do the images tell us? • • • • The white background suggests innocence, purity and happiness. The film is about a young couple. There is most likely a formal wear event in the film because the male character is wearing a suit. The film is fun and happy because of the emotions show in the poster. What information is included to appeal to an audience? • Title • Tagline • The names of the two main actors in the film. Is this a successful poster? No, the poster doesn’t really tell us anything at all about the film and doesn’t give the audience any incentive to watch the film. However, it’s simplicity is perfect for transferring to a DVD case.

Letters to Juliet What do the images tell us? • It is set in a warm climate • The colours also tell us that it is a happy and positive film. • The main location is somewhere in a rural setting with a large garden or orchard. What information is included to appeal to an audience? • Title • Tagline Is this a successful poster? No, because the bottom image is so small, it wouldn’t be clear as to what is was on a DVD case. But this poster is very good at presenting the viewer with the themes of the film without revealing the events in the film. It doesn’t the actors or the director as a marketing technique though which could letter down promotion.

The Back-up Plan What do the images tell us? • The main female character in the film is flirty, confident and the baby shoes she is holding implies that she is also pregnant. • The male is character is also confident and admires the female character. • It is a happy, light-hearted and funny film. Yes, the poster uses iconography which helps describe the themes of the film to the viewer without giving any of the plot away, as well as creating an incentive to see the film.
