Recent studies indicate that the potential for atmospheric carbon dioxide fixation in the first six years of Guadua's growth from new sowings is 54 metric tons per hectare - a fundamental discovery that facilitates participation in the international system of trading emission rights and will bring additional benefits to the investors and farmers who plant and cultivate guadua, that produces zero emissions! Guadua provides countless environmental services. It conserves the soil, controls erosion, regulates the flow of rivers and streams, supplies organic material, and acts as a CO2 sink. Lal Sequestering atmospheric CO2 is necessitated by its present concentration of 385 ppm and increasing at the rate of 2 ppm y-1. Increase in atmospheric emission of CO2 with the attendant global warming and environmental degradation are driven by global energy demand. In comparison with the emission of 300 Pg C between 1850 and 2000, total emission during the 21st century is estimated at 950 to 2195 Pg, with an annual rate of emission of 20 to 35 Pg C y-1. Reduction of CO2 atmospheric loading can be achieved by biological, chemical and technological options through either reducing or sequestering emissions. This article describes technological options of sequestering atmospheric CO2 into other global pools. Geologic sequestration involves underground storage of industrially emitted CO2 into the geosphere for long-term and secure storage. Liquefied CO2 is injected about 1000 m below the ground surface either in stable porous rocks, oil wells, coal beds, or saline aquifers. Co-injecting CO2 along with H2S and SO2 is also possible. Over time, the trapped CO2 reacts with minerals to form carbonates, enhances oil recovery, or displaces coal bed methane. Deep injection of CO2 under the ocean creates a CO2 lake which eventually penetrates into the sediments. Iron fertilization is another technique of enhancing the C pool in marine biota, notably phytoplankton. The so-called biological pumping is based on the iron hypothesis of transferring C to the ocean floor. Terrestrial C sequestration is based on the natural process of photosynthesis. Transfer of CO2 into the biotic pool and soil C pool via humification and formation of secondary carbonates has numerous ancillary benefits through enhancement of ecosystem services. Soil C sequestration is essential to improving soil quality, increasing use efficiency of agronomic input, and advancing world food security. It is also needed to improve water quality by filtration and denaturing of pollutants, and enhancing biodiversity by saving land for nature conservancy. Soil C sequestration is a low hanging fruit, and a bridge to the future until low-C or no-C fuel sources take effect. Ronald 1 Abstract: Although pasture maintains high soil carbon level, other better options may exist in the Neotropics, such as woody bamboo (Guadua angustifolia), in contributing to global C sequestration through increased soil carbon storage. A study was conducted in montane Ecuador to test a hypothesis that bamboo results in greater soil carbon levels than pasture ecosystems. We sampled soil at three depths (0-5, 5-15, and 15-30 cm) and measured standing biomass in six pasture-bamboo paired sites at elevations from 1000 to 1500 m a.s.l. in Nanegal, northwestern Ecuador. Compared with pasture, soils under bamboo at the above three depths had greater total C and N concentrations, and lower bulk densities. Because of the difference in soil bulk density between pasture and bamboo systems, C and N stock was calculated based on 30-cm soil depth in bamboo and corrected soil depth in pasture (22.6 cm) that provided soil mass equal to that under bamboo. The soil C stock at "equivalent 0-30" cm depth was greater under bamboo (60.8-123 Mg ha-1) than that under pasture (33.4-75.3 Mg ha-1). The carbon stock of bamboo standing biomass (51.8-95.6 Mg ha-1) was remarkably greater than that of pasture standing biomass (3.53-8.14 Mg ha-1). Higher soil N stock and lower C/N ratio were observed under bamboo than under pasture. Our results suggest that more C would be stored in terrestrial ecosystems with the planting of bamboo to degraded (pasture) soils in the Andes. (C) 2007 Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, Inc. Guadua Bamboo : Guadua Bamboo Guadua Bamboo Why cut down timber, which can take upwards of 20 years to regenerate, when there is an abundance of guadua bamboo, which can reach heights of 100 feet (30 meters) in as few as 3-4 years? The reason owes to economic incentive. Despite its tremendous utility and its historical importance in the region, lack of interest and knowledge of bamboo in the rest of the Ecuador has rendered its cultivation, management, and harvesting a financially unattractive venture. The demand just isn’t there to support a price that is consistent with its true value. Ecology & EconomicsWe believe that if we can reinvigorate interest in bamboo, than we can preserve this rainforest. Guadua bamboo is one of the few species that can still thrive in the deforested and degraded land that surrounds the rainforest; in fact, guadua bamboo is an agent of ecological regeneration, for its canny ability to store and manage local moisture, as well as prevent erosion and maintain nutrients in the soil – all of which are prized characteristics for a region that is contending with anthropogenic desertification. The task is rather straightforward: we connect a new generation of local bamboo growers (former loggers and former cattle ranchers) with a new generation of national and international bamboo buyers. The local growers form a co-opt and cultivate bamboo on abandoned cattle pasture, and we find a market that recognizes the true value of this product. If successful, illegal logging will be replaced by the reforestation of guadua bamboo in conjunction with a diverse and complementary array of food-producing trees. The resulting gains in carbon sequestration is a pleasant externality (54 metric tons of CO2 per hectare in the first six years). In ActionIn the meantime, we’re putting a small fraction of the Jama-Coaque Reserve’s bamboo to use. We don’t have a formal “house” to live in; instead, we have built, with machetes and cord, a comprehensive camp-quarters entirely out of bamboo: bamboo shelter, bamboo tables, bamboo benches, bamboo fire instruments, bamboo cups. bamboo racks to dry our clothes. Inside the reserve there is also an abandoned house of rotted timber that we are rebuilding with bamboo (to be completed before January 1, 2009). If 21st century humanity is to redirect itself onto a sustainable course, bamboo will be one of the materials that forms its backbone. Whenever we use bamboo we make a valuable contribution to the environment, with its high per hectare density, rapid growth, ready exploitation and enormous capacity for renewal without reforesting we leave the much slower growing hardwood forests untouched. Trees vs. Guadua Angustifolia : Trees vs. Guadua Angustifolia All bamboo, but Guadua in particular, has a rapid growth and a higher productivity, when compared with trees. Usually, the growth cycle of bamboo is a third of that of a "tree of rapid growth" and has double the productivity per hectare. Compared to oak, Guadua even produces up to four times more wood. In addition, bamboo emerge from the soil with a fixed diameter, without showing increases of diameter over time, as happens with trees. The maximum diameter reported for Guadua angustifolia is 25 cm and the average is between 9 and 13 centimeters. In the case of Guadua angustifolia, a 21 cm daily growth in height has been observed, so that it reaches its maximum height (15 - 30 meters) in the first six months of growth and can be harvested after 5 to 6 years. This growth is rarely surpassed by the native timber species of the region. If handled properly, guadua may have an unlimited production once it has been established, without a great deal of care. The ideal composition of culms in a guadua grove is estimated to be 10% shoots, 30% young ones, and 60% mature ones with a density of 3000 to 8000 culms per hectare. This means a productivity of 1,200 - 1,350 culms per hectare per year, and an effective alternative to wood for production of laminated and agglomerate wood (columns, beams, girders, planks, panels, etc.). Slide 12: Guadua, A New High Tech Building Material! As a building material, guadua bamboo stands out because of its structural properties, the strength/weight ratio, is one of them. The fibers of bamboo are up to 1 cm long, while those of wood are approximately 2mm long. That’s why Guadua surpasses most woods and can even withstand a comparison with steel and some high-tech fibers (guadua's tensile strength is 28,000 per square inch versus 23,000 for steel).Its capacity to absorb energy and the higher bending strength makes this bamboo an ideal material for seismic-resistant constructions.Bamboo possesses only a small proportion of lignin. Its main component is silicic acid, which gives the shoot its durability and hardness. The tissues composition of guadua is 40% fiber, 51% parenchyma and 9% conductive tissue, which explains its astonishing strength and flexibility.For the past 10 years, bamboo experts have been experimenting with the multiple uses of bamboo and are still discovering new applications, bamboo fiber for the garment and automotive industries, flooring boards, veneers as thin as 0.2 mm, are just some of many examples. Bamboo panels, especially floors, are more and more in demand all over the world, because they have the texture of marble and the elegance of wood; in addition, they are strong, durable, smooth, clean, non-sliding and resistant to humidity.For all these reasons guadua bamboo is on the point of a breakthrough, and may soon be described as the new high technology material of the future that replaces to use of conventional woods in constructions. Where does Guadua Angustifolia grows? : Where does Guadua Angustifolia grows? Due to their great adaptability, bamboos have a wide geographical range, which covers three large and well-defined regions. The first is the region of the Asian Pacific (the most extensive in area and the most advanced in the different aspects of the use and industrialization of bamboo) then there are Africa and America. Bamboo grow naturally in all continents, with the exception of Europe, from 51° North to 47° South, in latitudinal terms, and from sea level to 4,300 meters above sea level. Most bamboos prefer the humid habitats of the cloud forests and lowland tropical jungles, although some grow in dry but never desert habitats. Their maximum known altitude is found in the paramo or high moorlands of the equatorial Andes. In all, 90 genera and 1100 species exist in the world, of which roughly half pertain to America (41 genera and 451 species) and are spread from the southeastern United States to southern Chile. The area with the highest degree of endemism and diversity in the region is Bahia, Brazil, followed by the cordillera of the Andes and the southern part of Central America. Of the American countries, Brazil shows the highest diversity, with a total of 141 species of woody bamboos. It is followed by Colombia, with 72 woody species; Venezuela, with 60; Ecuador, with 44; Costa Rica, with 39; and Mexico, with 37. From satellite photos it has been calculated that in the southwestern part of the Amazon region, that is, in the frontier between the state of Acre in Brazil, Madre de Dios in Peru and Pando in Bolivia, the area covered by bamboos may be approximately 180,000 square kilometers. But, if we take into account that approximately 11 % of each square kilometer of Andean forests is covered by bamboos, a possible estimate is that, at a minimum, 11 million hectares in Latin America are covered by bamboo. Guadua has been introduced to several Central American, Caribbean, Asian, and even North American and European countries. However, in its natural state, Guadua angustifolia only grows in Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela, where it forms dominant colonies known as "guaduales" or guadua groves. The "guaduales" reach their optimum development in the central region of the Andes, between 500 and 1,500 meters above sea level, at temperatures between 17° and 26° Centigrade, rainfalls of 1,200 - 2,500 mm/year, a relative humidity of 80 - 90% and on alluvial soils that are rich in volcanic ash with a moderate fertility and good drainage. In each of the nodes of the bamboo there is a dividing wall or transverse wall that in addition to making it more rigid and elastic, it also avoids rupture when bent. Because of this characteristic bamboo constructions are perfectly earthquake-resistant. The composition of the fibers in the walls of the bamboo allows that it can be cut cross-sectional or in pieces of any length, using simple manual tools like the machete. Until recently professional constructors and the public in general were totally ignorant for the structural, mechanical, and environmental advantages of guadua.These are the disadvantages of bamboo when not handled correctly: Once cut, insect attacks will occur, they construct great galleries in the walls of the bamboo. For that reason, once cut, it must immediately go true a special immunization and drying process. Bamboo in permanent contact with the humidity of the soil, will rot and attracts termites and other insects; for that reason it cannot be used as a foundation without receiving a special treatment first. Misconceptions About Constructing With Bamboo : Misconceptions About Constructing With Bamboo Once the bamboo is dry it is highly flammable, for this reason it is important to cover the bamboo with a fire-resistant substance. When bamboo ages, it loses its resistance if one does not treat it appropriately in advance.
