Common Core IniKaKve – In the Beginning Beginning in the Spring of 2009, Governors and state commissioners of educaKon from 48 states, 2 territories and the District of Columbia commiUed to developing a common core of state K-‐12 English-‐language arts (ELA) and mathemaKcs standards. The Common Core State Standards Ini/a/ve (CCSSI) was a state-‐led eﬀort coordinated by the NaKonal Governors AssociaKon (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Oﬃcers (CCSSO). www.corestandards.org
Why Common Standards • Standards varied across the states • Global, not neighborhood compeKKon (economic) • High school wasn’t preparing students for college or careers
Common Core ObjecKves • Prepare students with knowledge and skills to succeed in college and career • Ensure consistent expectaKons regardless of a student’s locaKon • Provide educators, parents, and students with clear, focused guideposts • Oﬀer economies of scale and sharing of best pracKces

The Biggest Challenge • In the MathemaKcs classroom, focusing on computaKon to focusing on problem solving strategies – stands to be one of the biggest challenges teachers face as they work to implement the new standards • In Language Arts and Literacy, educators have challenged the focus on informaKonal texts and that they do not dictate content but are really just guidepost for the skills needed in both elementary and secondary educaKon
Where the Standards Have Been Adopted • Alaska, Nebraska, Texas, and Virginia – opt out • Minnesota adopts ELA only • 85% of US student populaKon
