Description

How do Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in the US affect your business in the education innovation sector? Find out at the first presentation in our Education Innovation series.

The CCSS were developed by leaders from the US National Governors Association and the US Council of Chief State School Officers, and have been adopted by most states in the US. These new standards provide teachers and parents with a consistent, clear understanding of what K-12 students are expected to learn. Under the CCSS, educational materials delve deeper into fewer topics, so students master the content, rather than memorizing, and learn hands-on, real-world skills.

The new standards create a nationwide framework for educators across the US. Michael Campbell, President, Forward Thinking EDU, discusses the CCSS, and why these standards matter to your startup’s product marketing strategy. We’ll address the following, and more:

-When the political rhetoric will settle regarding the CCSS?
-What types of content do teachers expect— aligned, supported or integrated?
-How can the CCSS change learning and teaching?

Aligning  Your  Start-‐Up  with  the  Common  Core   Michael  Campbell   President,  Forward  Thinking  EDU

A  Quick  Overview   • Who  am  I   • What  I  do   • Why  am  I  here?

Our  Time  To  Make  A  Difference   • Genesis  of  the  Common  Core  State  Standards   • Aligned,  Supported,  or  Integrated   • Changing  EducaKon  –  Your  Opportunity

EducaKonal  Issues  We  Face

Imagine  a  Race

IntroducKon

Common  Core  IniKaKve  –  In  the  Beginning   Beginning  in  the  Spring  of  2009,  Governors  and  state  commissioners  of   educaKon  from  48  states,  2  territories  and  the  District  of  Columbia   commiUed  to  developing  a  common  core  of  state  K-‐12  English-‐language  arts   (ELA)  and  mathemaKcs  standards.     The  Common  Core  State  Standards  Ini/a/ve  (CCSSI)  was  a  state-‐led  effort   coordinated  by  the  NaKonal  Governors  AssociaKon  (NGA)  and  the  Council  of   Chief  State  School  Officers  (CCSSO).     www.corestandards.org

Why  Common  Standards   •  Standards  varied  across  the  states   •  Global,  not  neighborhood  compeKKon  (economic)   •  High  school  wasn’t  preparing  students  for  college  or  careers

Common  Core  ObjecKves   •  Prepare  students  with  knowledge  and  skills  to  succeed  in  college  and   career   •  Ensure  consistent  expectaKons  regardless  of  a  student’s  locaKon   •  Provide  educators,  parents,  and  students  with  clear,  focused   guideposts   •  Offer  economies  of  scale  and  sharing  of  best  pracKces

Math  and  English  Language  Arts  Focus

IntenKonal  Design   The  Common  Core  State  Standards  were  designed  to  be:   •  Focused,  coherent,  clear,  and  rigorous   •  InternaKonally  benchmarked   •  Anchored  in  college  and  career-‐readiness   •  Evidence  and  researched-‐based

The  Biggest  Challenge   •  In  the  MathemaKcs  classroom,  focusing  on  computaKon  to  focusing  on   problem  solving  strategies  –  stands  to  be  one  of  the  biggest  challenges   teachers  face  as  they  work  to  implement  the  new  standards   •  In  Language  Arts  and  Literacy,  educators  have  challenged  the  focus  on   informaKonal  texts  and  that  they  do  not  dictate  content  but  are  really   just  guidepost  for  the  skills  needed  in  both  elementary  and  secondary   educaKon

Where  the  Standards  Have  Been  Adopted   • Alaska,  Nebraska,  Texas,  and   Virginia  –  opt  out   • Minnesota  adopts  ELA  only   • 85%  of  US  student   populaKon

PoliKcs  and  the  SeUling  of  the  Standards   • Florida,  Arizona,  and  Iowa   • New  York   • Indiana   • An  issue  of  local  control  vs.  state  and  naKonal  control

Aligned,  Supported,  or  Integrated

SupporKng  the  Common  Core

IntegraKon  of  the  Common  Core

EffecKve  in  the  Classroom   • Just  another  thing   • Accountability   • In  the  classroom

Keep  Students  on  Track   • Student  achievement   • On-‐Kme  graduaKon   • College  and  career  readiness

Replacing  Textbooks   Apps  are  becoming  the  new  textbooks

CreaKng  New  Learning  Tools   Local  experKse  will  be  important

Opportunity  for  Assessments   57%  of  Districts  are  slightly  prepared  to  administer  assessments

Assessment  and  EvaluaKon   • Prepare  a  quiz  or  challenge  to  assess  how  much  informaKon   parKcipants  learned   • Survey  parKcipants  to  see  if  they  found  the  training  beneficial
