Photo: Research Abstract : 2009 7 Research Abstract This presentation of algal biofuel will inform you on this new topic. There are many benefits to algal biofuel such as the excess from the biofuel can be fed to livestock and the carbon dioxide for the algal biofuel to grow is produced from the power plants. The steps to make algal biofuel will be discussed as well. What is it? : 2009 8 What is it? Algal Biofuel is an alternative to fossil fuels using earth’s natural resource to produce natural energy. Components : 2009 9 Components Water Sunlight Carbon dioxide (CO2) (Haag) Photo: Advantages : 2009 10 Advantages Algae grows naturally Use excess CO2 from power plant pollution. Excess from algal biofuel production can feed livestock. (Algal Biofuel) Photo: Step 1 - Growing : 2009 11 Step 1 - Growing Algae grows in plastic bags to decrease the chance of unwanted particles. Temperature regulators also help for faster growth. (Jenkins) Photo: Step 2 - Bioreactor : 2009 12 Step 2 - Bioreactor Algae travels through tubes made of synthetic plastic. “Water-weighted rollers” extract the algae onto tracks inside the tubes. (Jenkins) Photo: Step 3 - Sunlight : 2009 13 Step 3 - Sunlight The tracks expose the algal to sunlight. Sunlight starts the photosynthesis process. (Jenkins) Photo: Step 4 - CO2 : 2009 14 Step 4 - CO2 Carbon Dioxide is added into the bioreactor to help photosynthesis process. (Jenkins) Photo: Microsoft Clipart Step 5 - Oil : 2009 15 Step 5 - Oil Oil will be extracted and refined to produce biofuel. Ex. Ethanol or Jet Fuel (Jenkins) Photo: Why should you care? : 2009 16 Why should you care? Less pollution, better for environment Less dependent on foreign oil New job market How can you help? : 2009 17 How can you help? At this point in time citizens know little making it hard to contribute. Citizens can help by being open to change. Remember that we can reuse this product for livestock and by making the algal biofuel we are cutting down on the regular pollution levels. Photo: Works Cited : 2009 18 Works Cited Algal Biofuels.
