What The Presentation Is Fundamentally About:  What The Presentation Is Fundamentally About The full presentation answers the fundamental challenge facing America in space in the early 21st century - how to affordably become a true spacefaring nation with the ability to routinely and safely conduct a full range of human space activities throughout the central solar system. Today, this is still a dream. How to make this a reality is the purpose of the full presentation. AIAA Space & Missile Systems Technical Committees:  AIAA Space & Missile Systems Technical Committees Before getting started, it’s helpful to understand why the presentation has been developed. The AIAA Space Logistics Technical Committee (SLTC) is one of 65 technical committees of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and is one of 11 committees in the Space and Missile Systems Group. SLTC Vision and Scope:  SLTC Vision and Scope Innovative, near-term space logistics to establish safe and affordable human and robotics spacefaring operations throughout the Earth-Moon System & Beyond Foster the definition and development of near-term, integrated space logistics capabilities that enable safe, affordable, and routine spacefaring operations throughout the central solar system and provide example innovative logistical architectures and related system concepts to support future mission planning and improved public understanding. The vision of the SLTC is the transformation of the United States into a true spacefaring nation with the ability to conduct safe and routine human space operations throughout the central solar system - Earth orbit, Earth-Moon system, Mars, and near-Earth objects or NEOs. (NEXT) The scope of the SLTC’s activities is to develop and provide technically-accurate examples of space logistics architectures and concepts that can enable the United States to achieve the SLTC vision within the next 20 years. The presentation provides one such example architecture and related concepts. The American Spacefaring Dream:  The American Spacefaring Dream In the early 1950s, Dr. Wernher Von Braun, Wiley Lee, and others established a vision of America as a spacefaring nation At the heart of this vision was the establishment of a permanent space logistics infrastructure enabling routine and safe human operations in the central solar system Images copyright © by Terry Sunday (www.zianet.com/sundayt) Used with permission. 6 images self advancing (NEXT) Achieving This Spacefaring Dream:  Near-Term 1st-Gen RLVs Achieving This Spacefaring Dream In the 1950s we didn’t have the technological capability to build the enabling space logistics infrastructure Today, 50 years later, this is no longer the situation The presentation provides technically-representative examples of how America’s aerospace industrial capabilities can be applied to building the enabling space logistics infrastructure (NEXT) 6 images self advancing Super Heavy Spacelifter Space Logistics Base Space Logistics Vehicle Space Hotel Space Logistics Transport 4 Fundamental American Space Program Challenges:  4 Fundamental American Space Program Challenges Establishing the space logistics capabilities that enable civil and commercial human spacefaring operations to be undertaken safely and affordably throughout the central solar system Organizing government and industry to quickly begin the development and deployment of primarily commercial space logistics capabilities Undertaking these government and industry activities in a way that benefits the U.S. aerospace industrial base, including: Beginning the transition of critical technical and operational expertise to a new generation of aerospace professionals through the process of building actual operational systems Revitalizing industrial capabilities Increasing competition and innovation among commercial space providers Encouraging and providing sustaining employment for the next generations of aerospace professionals to enable the United States to become a true spacefaring nation Undertaking this is in a way that is affordable to the U.S. Government The aging of the American aerospace workforce is the most time critical “space” issue facing the United States. Considering the average age of aerospace professionals is in the early 50s and the 5-10 years required to develop a new system, time is running out for starting new development programs through which the hands-on education and training of a new generation of aerospace professionals can be successfully undertaken. In another 5 years, it may be too late. Near-Term Space Logistics Infrastructure Solution:  Near-Term Space Logistics Infrastructure Solution These challenges can be successfully and affordably addressed through a tightly-focused strategy to develop, deploy, and operate an integrated, near-term space logistics infrastructure providing: Assured reusable access to and from low Earth orbit for passengers and cargo Spacelift for heavy and oversize cargo Orbiting space logistics facilities In-space reusable transportation systems based at these orbiting facilities that provide routine transportation, first, throughout the Earth-Moon system and, then, the central solar system The late 1950’s plans for developing the American space program emphasized reusable space access, orbiting space logistics facilities, and in-space reusable transportation systems, reflecting the inherent advantage of building a space exploration and civilization program on the foundation of an integrated logistics infrastructure. Returning to this approach is the core of this example architecture. “Space Access Barrier” Perception Obstacle:  “Space Access Barrier” Perception Obstacle The key obstacle to this strategy is a strongly-held public belief in a “space access barrier” akin to the 1940s public’s belief in a “sound barrier” to human flight faster than the speed of sound Belief in this “space access barrier” has resulted in substantial stagnation in aerospace investment and public doubt about the possibility of becoming a true spacefaring nation One way to overcome this perception is to provide examples of near-term space logistics capabilities that American industry can develop and bring into operation Define how current American aerospace expertise and industrial capabilities can be effectively used Describe the operational capabilities that can be achieved Describe how government and industry can be organized to effectively and affordably bring these space logistics capabilities into operation In the mid-1930s as aeronautical engineers and scientists began to investigate the potential for supersonic flight, limitations on early wind tunnels hampered the ability to conduct tests in the transonic range (the speed where the airflow over the wing reaches Mach 1 or sonic velocity). This testing difficulty led to a newspaper article describing this as a “barrier” to supersonic flight - thus creating the wide-spread perception of the sound barrier. Implementation Timeline Used in this Example:  Implementation Timeline Used in this Example Consistent with the charter of the SLTC, this presentation describes an example architecture and systems for rapidly developing and deploying significant space logistics capabilities over the next 20 years. (NEXT) The top elements are (left to right) 1st-generation (near-term) reusable launch vehicles, a Shuttle-derived heavy space launcher, and a 100-person space hotel. The bottom elements are a LEO space logistics base and space logistics vehicle (left illustration), 2nd-generation RLVs for improved passenger transport, and a large manned spacecraft for logistics transport. All but two of these represent system concepts using current state-of-the-art technology. (NEXT) The two elements of this example that are not near-term technologies are the 2nd-gneration RLVs for general passenger transport and the nuclear thermal rocket propulsion system for the large manned spacecraft to enable it to operate throughout the Earth-Moon system.
