Each series follows a different storyline including murder, voodoo, and an asylum for the mentally insane. It is broadcast on the cable television channel FX in the United States. American Horror Story has been well received by TV critics. The repertory cast has been widely applaud. Jessica Lange especially, who received the Emmy award, the Golden Globe award and the Screen Actors Guild award for her performance(s). Consistently high ratings have been drawn for the FX network thanks to the series, with its first season being the biggest new cable television series of 2011. American horror STORY http:// en.wikipedia.org /wiki/ American_Horror_Story PRODUCTION AND LOCATION: PRODUCTION AND LOCATION Consistent stars of the show such as Jessica Lange, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe , Frances Conroy and Sarah Paulson are to be praised for their mesmerizing performances. However, without American Horror Story’s talented team behind them it wouldn’t be the award winning show it is today! Producers Alexis Martin Woodall and Patrick Mckee and their executive producers Dante Di Loreto, Brad Falchuk, Ryan Murphy and Tim Minear are the true heroes for making the show such a success. Bradley Buecker and Doc Crotzer are the editors of the show, they’re responsible for piecing each episode together and adding special effects to highlight the horror, gore and twists which underlie each season. American Horror Story is filmed in Los Angeles, California – locations include Paramount Studios. The first season is based around an old mansion known as ‘murder house’, but in real life it’s known as the stately Rosenheim Mansion in L.A. Architect Alfred Rosenheim built it in 1908 in Country Club Park as his own residence. Season two is based within Briarcliff Manor, home of the mentally insane. Although shot in a studio, Old Orange County Courthouse in California is used as Briarcliff’s exterior. American Horror Story: Coven takes place within Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies - a boarding school for troubled young witches in New Orleans. Each episode of this eerie, but exceptional television show runs for approximately 39 – 52 minutes, supplying viewers with a wholesome watch. The show is a Ryan Murphy Production and it also belongs to 20 th Century Fox Television; therefore, it is owned by major media conglomerate News Corporation. PRODUCTION PROCESS: From the beginning Murphy and Falchuk planned that each season of the series would tell a different story. After the first season finale aired, Murphy spoke of his plans to change the cast and the location for the second season. However, he did say some of the actors who starred in the first season would be returning. FX Chief Executive, John Landgraf , described the unique format of the series stating “The notion of doing an anthological series of miniseries with a repertory cast – has proven groundbreaking, wildly successful and will prove to be trendsetting .” Murphy then explained the process of planning a series' season takes about a year. "We come up with story first and then we come up with the characters," he said. "It is a repertory company, so we’ll move people around and sometimes there won’t yet be a role for somebody. Like when we started the second season, I really had no idea that Dylan would be the person to play Sarah’s son, but the deeper we got, I thought, that would work great .” PRODUCTION PROCESS "The people that are coming back will be playing completely different characters, creatures, monsters, etc. [The Harmons '] stories are done. People who are coming back will be playing entirely new characters," – Ryan Murphy http:// en.wikipedia.org /wiki/ American_Horror_Story CONCEPTION: Creator Murphy and Falchuk, known for producing ‘Glee’, started work on American Horror Story before the FOX series began production. Murphy wanted to do something different to what he had achieved previously and thus began his work on the series. After going from Nip/Tuck to Glee it was obvious to him he wanted to do something dark. He stated he and Brad had always loved the horror genre. Falchuk was intrigued by the idea of putting an unusual twist on the horror genre, stating their main aim in creating the series was to scare viewers; following this, it’s evident the shows purpose is to frighten it’s audience in a cleverly obtained way. In February 2011, FX officially announced that it had ordered a pilot for a possible series from Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, with both Murphy and Falchuk writing and Murphy directing. Dante Di Loreto was announced as executive producer. Production on the series began in April 2011 . In J uly 2011, FX officially announced the production had been picked up to series. CONCEPTION “You want people to be a little bit off balance afterwards” – Falchuk “What you saw in the finale was the end of the Harmon house. The second season of the show will be a brand-new home or building to haunt. Just like this year, every season of this show will have a beginning, middle and end. [The second season] won't be in L.A. It will obviously be in America, but in a completely different locale .” - Murphy on American Horror Story' s anthology format. Gender and age: With American Horror Story rated 18, it is targeted at a mature audience. However, it’s not a series that will appeal to those above the age of 34. For the reason that, it includes shocking scenes that the older generation may find appalling. Furthermore, depending upon the season, American Horror Story may appeal to one gender more than the other. Murder House was safe, it didn’t really focus on gender equality. Nevertheless, the relationship between characters Tate and Violet indicate the audience consists mostly of girls – stereotypically, boys prefer action, blood and gore and therefore a series based on relations wouldn’t really be their first choice. Be that as it may, season two of American Horror Story centers around main character Lana Winters – a homosexual journalist who gets committed to Briarcliff due to her sexuality. Asylum consists of controversial issues. For instance, Dr. Oliver Thredson is riddled with troubles, the main one being his mothers absence. This is touched upon graphically – it emphasizes women should carry out their duty of being a mother, for it can affect children mentally. Debates arose regarding this; this makes me think males preferred Asylum due to the mass amount of action that occurred and the fact women didn’t seem too keen on the message it portrayed. Still, like Murder House, relationships did occur between patients; therefore, maybe this attracted a female following. In addition, American Horror Story: Coven without a doubt mostly wooed girls. This season was different to previous ones because it included a great amount of comic and witty quotes. Not only this, but it wasn’t as horrific as the past seasons – it was very clean, very posh in comparison to asylum which focused on murder and patients living in their own filth. Gender and age SEASON ONE: Murder house: The concept of American Horror Story: Murder House is infidelity. The season takes place in 2011 and follows the Harmon family. After a tragic miscarriage and unwelcome affair, Psychiatrist Ben, his wife Vivien and their teenage daughter Violet move from Boston to Los Angeles. They relocate to a restored mansion, home to several ghosts who haunt the premises. The first episode sees the Harmon’s encounter the house’s previous residents the Langdon’s - Constance Langdon and her two children Tate and Addie and the disfigured Larry Harvey. Vivien and Ben try to rekindle their relationship, whilst their daughter, who suffers from depression, Violet seeks comfort in Tate. The Harmon’s lives are greatly influenced by the Langdon’s and Larry, as the family discover that the home is haunted by the ghosts of anyone who’s ever died on the property. In the UK, it premiered on non-terrestrial channel FX, with 128,200 viewers. The second episode saw an increase of 27%, receiving an overall viewership of 158,700. Demographics & profile: ‘murder house’ Season two: asylum: The second series, titled American Horror Story: Asylum , is about sanity. The story takes place in 1964 and is based on the patients, doctors and nuns who occupy the Briarcliff Mental Institution. It’s said to treat and house the criminally insane. The wardens who run the asylum include stern Sister Jude, her protégé Sister Mary Eunice and the founder of the institution, Monsignor Timothy Howard . The doctors charged with treating the patients at the asylum include psychiatrist Dr. Oliver Thredson and the sadistic scientist Dr. Arthur Arden. The patients, many of whom claim to be unjustly institutionalized, include lesbian journalist Lana Winters, accused serial killer Kit Walker, and alleged murderer Grace Bertrand. Briarcliff's inhabitants are routinely subject to supernatural and scientific influences, including demonic possession and extraterrestrial abduction. Season two: asylum http:// en.wikipedia.org /wiki/ American_Horror_Story Season three: coven: The third season, titled American Horror Story: Coven, is about oppression, specifically of minorities. It's been around 300 years since the Salem witch trials. Those witches who remain are almost extinct and in danger once again. A school has opened in New Orleans to teach young witches how to protect themselves. The long-absent Supreme, Fiona, arrives to ensure the safety of the coven and their secrets. Fiona's daughter, Cordelia , teaches at the school. Events reveal a long-held rivalry between the witches of Salem and the Voodoo practitioners of New Orleans, as well as a historic grudge between Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau and socialite serial killer Delphine LaLaurie . The primary theme of the season is oppression; specifically, the oppression of marginalized groups. Other themes include witchcraft, Voodoo, racism, and family, such as the relationships between mothers and daughters. The season is set primarily in the modern day and includes flashbacks to the early 1970s and the 1830s. Season three: coven http:// en.wikipedia.org /wiki/ American_Horror_Story Up-to-date ratings: coven (2013-14): Up-to-date ratings: coven (2013-14) According to a report published by the Huffington Post " American Horror Story: Coven" broke ratings records for the FX drama. "Coven" put 5.5 million viewers under its spell with the Wednesday, Oct. 9 premiere.” This indicates the series success keeps on growing as previous viewers return alongside a fresh audience! Furthermore, as stated by the Hollywood Reporter, “American Horror Story closed the book on its third iteration on Wednesday, Jan. 29 th and Coven gave the FX anthology a finale best with 4.24 million viewers during its 10 p.m. broadcast.” generic conventions: generic conventions Generic Conventions is the term used to explain the elements or factors which help define a product. Each season of American Horror Story consists of a beginning, middle and end. Therefore, each season is different. The narrative structure of the show is majorly factual – flashbacks aid the plot to unravel and within different eras forms of terror and twisted stories underlie. Furthermore, stylistic conventions – i.e. how it looks, character types and lighting – mould the show into something that prides the horror genre. How it looks is highly important, for the reason that if it doesn’t match what it’s trying to pursue the audience will perceive it as an amateur piece. American Horror Story is consistently dark, mystery lurks within each chapter - i t leaves the audience wanting more! I find the duration of each episode perfect. Forty-five minutes is long enough to supply a whole episode of entertainment – it’s not too long, so the audience won’t grow tired and it’s not too short for the audience to give up on waiting for the next addition of horrific distraction. It’s obvious American Horror Story is a high budget show that consists of special effects. Without CGI deformation of certain characters wouldn’t be accessed and the horror level would decrease. Overall, generic conventions are greatly important, for they provide the scare within each season. COMPETITORS : COMPETITORS SUPERNATURAL TRUE BLOOD THE WALKING DEAD American Horror Story competes with some major television productions, like the ones above, it is categorized as a thriller. Thrillers aim to scare the viewer to the point where they grow intrigued by the horrific plot. Each week they tune in to get their dose of unforgettable madness. Two brothers follow their father's footsteps as "hunters" fighting evil supernatural beings of many kinds including monsters, demons, and gods that roam the earth. Telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse encounters a strange new supernatural world when she meets the mysterious Bill, a southern Louisiana gentleman and vampire. Police officer Rick Grimes leads a group of survivors in a world overrun by zombies. RYAN MURPHY: PRODUCTIONS: RYAN MURPHY: PRODUCTIONS 2003 2009 2011 2012 Pre-American horror story: In 2009 Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk produced GLEE, a musical comedy about a group of ambitious and talented kids who escape the harsh realities of high school by joining a glee club, where they find the strength, acceptance and ultimately, their voice. Glee is the complete opposite to Murphy’s award winning series American Horror Story but it’s equally as popular. With four Golden Globe Awards, six Satellite Awards and fifty-seven other awards under the belt Glee’s fans, commonly referred to as ‘Gleeks’, keep coming back for more. It’s obvious it’s a much loved production for it to be one of the most tweeted-about TV shows; in fact, in 2011, it was the top trending TV show! Glee’s gone on to film five seasons in total. Pre-American horror story Post-American hORROR STORY: The New Normal is a comedy show relating to a homosexual couple, Bryan and David, who have it all… Well, almost. With successful careers and a loving, committed partnership, there is only one thing they are missing: a baby. And just when they think the stars will never align, enter Goldie, an extraordinary young woman with a checkered past. Goldie decides to change everything and move to L.A. with her precocious eight-year-old daughter. Desperate and broke - but also fertile - Goldie quickly becomes the guys' surrogate and quite possibly the girl of their dreams. Surrogate mother, surrogate family . On The New Normal website it states, “It’s 2012 and anything goes”, indicating just how accepting our generation is. The New Normal went on to win ‘Favorite N ew TV Comedy’ in the People’s Choice Awards and ‘Outstanding Comedy Series’ in the GLAAD Media Award. However, The New Normal was officially canceled on May 11, 2013. Post-American hORROR STORY
