Explain the difference between these terms: Creole, old Africans, and new Africans “Work Gangs” in the Fields:  “Work Gangs” in the Fields Great Gang – included strongest men who did the heavy field work Second Gang – women and older men; did lighter fieldwork (weeding) Third Gang – children, worked shorter hours; brought food & water to field gangs Women in the Fields:  Women in the Fields Drivers:  Drivers Directed the work gangs Slave drivers were almost always black Carried whips and punished those who worked slowly or showed disrespect New Climate, New Culture?:  New Climate, New Culture? West Indies were tropical like Africa but the Southern U.S. was much cooler New foods (corn, squash, salted codfish) and language Most African slaves, though traumatized, kept memories of African life and their value system
