ABSTRACT Effectiveness of Traditional Farming in Regaining Saline Affected Paddy Lands - A Case Study on Poonahary DS Division of Sri Lanka Lafir S. Mohamed Agriculture is the major economic sector of the Kilinochchi District. The traditional farming sector was well developed in the region before the conflict in terms of traditional technology adoption, salinity management and per hectare yield and the region had been an exporter to southern part of the country before start of the conflict. Since the date conflict started, the provincial economic development along with crop production sector has deteriorated. The productive assets, infrastructure, traditional practices and the preserved paddy varieties also devastated due to the civil war. At the resumption of farming after resettlement many paddy field became abandoned and saline affected and nonproductive. This study conducted to understand the effectiveness of traditional paddy in Regaining Saline Affected Paddy Lands in Poonahary explains the status and the possibility of regaining saline affected paddy lands through the traditional farming methods. It was revealed that the paddy lands are becoming abandoned due to the non-maintenance of infrastructure, lack of awareness and knowledge, inputs and policy level mismatch. This study emphasizes measures to minimize the saline impact of the paddy lands and improve the sector to its original state. Policy level recommendations are proposed to protect the paddy lands and to develop traditional farming sector as an industry.
