Slide 1: A Proposal for Integrating SEAN materials at BCOM SEAN –one brand of TEE : SEAN –one brand of TEE Seminary by Extension for All Nations What is TEE? : TEE Theological What is TEE? Education Extension SEAN provides a framework of tools for discipling others : SEAN provides a framework of tools for discipling others Learning through SEAN : Learning through SEAN Small Group Meetings Practical Ministry Personal Application Study materials completed at home What does SEAN offer that might not be offered by our other current BCOM theology courses? : What does SEAN offer that might not be offered by our other current BCOM theology courses? It provides continuity on campus/GI sites It targets BCOM Grads’ End-Users Discipleship tools are in place to train multitudes from revival Provides a measurable, minimum, easily reproducible standard of systematic theology for all our grads. Transformation via immediate ministry assignment The small discussion groups provide natural opportunity to meet weekly as the body of Christ 1. It provides Continuity on campus/GI sites : 1. It provides Continuity on campus/GI sites Homogeneity in: Content Methodology On Campus On Global Internship Sites ½ way around the world Because the material is standard, continuity continues even if the Group Leader changes 2. It targets BCOM Grads’ End-Users : 2. It targets BCOM Grads’ End-Users Mostly third-world users Low-literacy level users Programmed instruction, repetition style The ordinary (non-Bible school) believer SEAN provides the missing bottom 20 rungs for the ordinary believer to be discipled : SEAN provides the missing bottom 20 rungs for the ordinary believer to be discipled Most TEE courses start three quarters way up the ladder – SEAN provides the missing bottom rungs Reversing the trend of middle class academics. Enabling ordinary people to learn & become confident in their faith. Bringing TEE into the hands of the very class of people Jesus came to reach 3. Discipleship tools are in place to train multitudes : 3. Discipleship tools are in place to train multitudes Latin America’s revival harvest Korea is using SEAN to equip their missionary force Nepal, Mongolia, Cambodia & Russia…Micronesia is begging for it to keep the fruit of their revival SEAN is in 70 languages; 120 countries Why lose 90% of the harvest through holes in the nets? – Uganda’s current scenario 4. Provides a measurable, minimum, easily reproducible standard of systematic theology for all our grads. : 4. Provides a measurable, minimum, easily reproducible standard of systematic theology for all our grads. Will our missionary grads disciple others: Piece meal? Using Topical methods? Using only the latest popular teachings? OR The whole Word of God from Genesis to Revelation centered around the Life of Christ This will become increasingly more important as our college grows exponentially. 5.Transformation via Immediate Ministry Assignments : 5.Transformation via Immediate Ministry Assignments Personal Transformation as they apply the lessons to their lives. Church Transformation: Capable leaders are raised up to assist the pastors in discipling others. Community Transformation: Confident in understanding, transformed themselves, they are emboldened to reach out to their neighbors Each Ministry Assignment is worth 30% of their grade, and must be done weekly. 6. The small discussion groups provide a natural opportunity to meet weekly as the body of Christ. : 6. The small discussion groups provide a natural opportunity to meet weekly as the body of Christ. sharing each one’s experiences ministering to one to another in prayer encouraging each other to action Some Objections Raised (as quoted from Workshop in England) : Some Objections Raised (as quoted from Workshop in England) ‘No time’ ‘Too simple’; ‘Not enough depth’ ‘Too repetitious, too tedious, programmed style’ ‘Western students don’t learn this way’ 2. Is it ‘too Simple’? : 2. Is it ‘too Simple’? SEAN may appear simple at first glance HOWEVER, the simplicity is deceptive – it masks a very complicated and sophisticated discipleship program. Check out the unit objectives, final exams, testimonies of Steve & Val, Tim & Carol, Alberta who led studies in the Compendium in the 1990’s It is outcome based, writing the tests first before units It has been calculated that over 600 hours of work have been put into each unit of student study for the SEAN Compendium – that translates to 6,000 hours per book! ‘Not enough depth?’ : ‘Not enough depth?’ Other courses at BCOM will bring further depth to this material. SEAN will be a springboard for students to research further. If we wanted to add further depth to it, we could request students do further research on the weekly given topic, say the divinity of Christ, and write a one-page paper on it if they desire an A in the class. Otherwise, with no extra work, they could get a B at best. ‘Too Tedious?’ : ‘Too Tedious?’ The programmed frames constantly require a response. Something is only tedious if takes forever to do. How well do we want him to retain the significant points? 3. Is it ‘too Repetitive?’ : 3. Is it ‘too Repetitive?’ How do we remember things? How do we remember students’ names? How do we memorize Scripture? In the end you’ll know the Scriptures if you keep repeating them! Ask Rich Lang! Repetition is a tool to build confidence 4. SEAN is ‘not the Westerner’s learning style’ : 4. SEAN is ‘not the Westerner’s learning style’ Students need time and exposure to learn this new style over a period of time It gives students a measurable, minimum, theological understanding world-wide Mssy need the tool to be in place upon arrival Good to start adapting to the learning styles of end-users now :  a. The key to successfully using SEAN is well-trained Group Leaders. Students need time and exposure to learn a whole new way of learning before they can confidently turn and use it with others. Slide 21: A Group Leader is a guide A Group Leader is NOT a preacher Slide 22: Is not a teacher is an integrator A Group Leader: A Group Leader: :  b. SEAN provides a measurable minimum theological understanding across the world; once we hit larger numbers in the college and our GI’s are spread across the world for half their training, this will be harder without a standard curriculum. Slide 24: c. You have cultural and language adjustments to make. No time to re-invent the wheel. It will prove difficult to find sufficient time to learn new methodology. It is difficult to translate class notes taken from lectures to notes useful for life-transforming small discussion groups once you arrive ‘in the future.’ Slide 25: d. It is one more part of the cross-cultural adaptation necessary for missionaries-in-training. Learn to learn in the style of your target countries now, and you will be more quickly received and successful. Where does SEAN not flourish? : Where does SEAN not flourish? Not so much among Westerners: Who think they know the basics of Christianity, though this is generally no longer true. Who have a wealth of materials Who live frenetic-paced lives – no time for homework Who often suffer from arrogance Who believe they have a right to choose their own program for becoming discipled Who prefer comfortable settings, with free meals & child-care provided Where then does SEAN flourish? : Where then does SEAN flourish? In the unreached people groups who are BCOM students’ target end-users. Low-literacy rates Economically depressed areas – no funds for meals, childcare In politically domineering, conformist countries. This has carried into the church. The pastor tells you what method you’ll be discipled through and you say, ‘When do I start?’ Korea Nepal Russia Latin America What are the SEAN Numbers? : What are the SEAN Numbers? Costa Rica has 10,000 students annually Columbia has 8,000 students annually Latin America countries in general have 1,000 -4,000 students annually Korea has 8,000 students currently Nepal has 2,600 students; 700 annually Far East Russia currently has 700 students It’s criss-crossing Cambodia, Vietnam & Mongolia big time Central Asian countries – Krayers have it in Pashto; Also in Farsi, Urdu, Tajik, Kyrgyz Is there a denominational bias? : Is there a denominational bias? SEAN was first put together by evangelical, charismatic Anglican missionaries in Chile and Argentina When it was further developed for publication, the Baptists worked side by side with them to take out denominational bias CMA, Wesleyans, Foursquare, S. Baptists, Anglicans, Presbyterians all use SEAN. Where does Chronological Bible Storying (CBS) fit in with SEAN? : Where does Chronological Bible Storying (CBS) fit in with SEAN? SEAN is the natural step after CBS. After the Primary Oral Learner is gripped by the stories in the Bible, he desires to become literate so he can read the Bible himself. Having become somewhat literate, SEAN materials can take him to the next step How long does it take to complete SEAN’s core curriculum? : How long does it take to complete SEAN’s core curriculum? 3 years (13 weeks for each book – so 1 term a book) for the ‘Life of Christ 6-volume Compendium’. 18 weeks for the basic believer’s course, ‘Abundant Life’ 10 weeks for the next step ‘The Big Picture’ is an overview of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation Tim’s SEAN class graduatesCompleted 6 books of Life of Christ1st graduating adult class - May 1994 : Tim’s SEAN class graduatesCompleted 6 books of Life of Christ1st graduating adult class - May 1994 Carol’s SEAN class graduates Completed 6 books of Life of Christ 1st graduating student class – May 1994 : Carol’s SEAN class graduates Completed 6 books of Life of Christ 1st graduating student class – May 1994 Proposal for SEAN in BCOM : Proposal for SEAN in BCOM On Campus first year: complete Books 1, 2 of Life of Christ (13 weeks each) during 2nd & 3rd term during 1.5 hour weekly class 1.5 hours worth of weekly homework Proposal for SEAN in BCOM : Proposal for SEAN in BCOM On Global Internship Sites: 1st term complete ‘The Big Picture’ – 10 weeks; simpler; useable as outreach to Cambodian college students in English 2nd – 4th term complete books 3-5 in ‘Life of Christ’ They could also teach Abundant Life (18 weeks) to college students in English, without having been a student of it themselves. Why SEAN on GI sites? : Why SEAN on GI sites? Serve as their systematic theology training arm Serve as a small group setting for ministry to each other Greatly ease the burden of preparation for local missionaries & mentors in preparing for small group discussion times Group Leader role could rotate among interns, as they would already be trained in the method Interns in Cambodia would be trained in the local church method and therefore be more useful in serving the Cambodian church. Do our GI Supervisors know SEAN? : Do our GI Supervisors know SEAN? Together with Chronological Bible Storying, SEAN is the other main method of training that the Hecks and Tolosis are using. It is widely popular in Cambodia and translated into Khmer. In Indonesia, Dirk & Sharon Reichardt are long-trained in SEAN, having been involved in the translation and facilitating of it in the Philippines. It has been translated into Bahasa. Proposal for SEAN at BCOM : Proposal for SEAN at BCOM Senior Term Complete Final Book 6 of The Life of Christ 13 weeks ‘Do you Know this Woman?’ : ‘Do you Know this Woman?’ Check out this Taster of SEAN materials, based on Mary’s washing of Jesus’ feet at Simon’s home.
