6 CORPORATE FITNESS STRATEGIES to reduce workplace STRESS Here are six strategies to use with corporate fitness centers to engage employees in physical activity and reduce the impact of workplace stress: 01 Research shows that one important way to lower the health risk of stress is physical exercise 1. DECREASE BARRIERS TO ACCESS Make fitness easy by tailoring fitness center hours and services to the needs of your population. For some employers, this means keeping the fitness center open extended hours so employees can come in early or stay late to exercise. For others, it means providing free workout clothes. Know and creatively address barriers to exercise for your unique population. 02 CREATE A CULTURE OF FITNESS OUTSIDE FITNESS CENTER WALLS An effective corporate fitness center is a hub for physical activity, but it has tentacles that reach outside its four walls. To engage fitness center members and non-members alike in stress-reducing exercises, consider bringing fitness staff into meetings to conduct simple movements, such as five-minute energy breaks, to get sedentary workers moving and re-energized. CHRONIC STRESS (Ongoing periods where stress is unrelenting)—is associated with a number of health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and depression 1. 03 KEEP PROGRAMS FRESH Cycle and power step classes may be standard fare, but Vinyasa yoga, ballroom fitness and Zumba may pique the interest of different employees. Engage your population in fitness by offering a variety of group exercise classes at various times for different levels—from beginner to advanced. By changing programs, it keeps fitness fresh and employees coming back for more. 04 BUILD TEAMS, BUILD BODIES, BUILD RELATIONSHIPS Recreational sports are more about social interaction, camaraderie and fun than fitness, but serve as stress-breakers nonetheless. Plus, recreational sports leagues can also help engage and recruit new fitness center members. Consider building social components—such as a volleyball league or ping pong tournament—into your corporate fitness center offerings. 05 06 EE EMPLOY VEY SUR GET FEEDBACK AND ACT ON IT Annual employee surveys assess both overall satisfaction with a corporate fitness center and probe for new ideas for programming. Surveys are also a great tool to identify where you are meeting employees’ needs and where you can improve services to increase participation. CREATE A VISION AND MEASURE WHAT MATTERS Develop a vision for employee health, and identify metrics that allow you to track your progress towards that vision. Because fitness benefits the individual most when it is regular, consider tracking the number of total employee visits per month plus the number of visits per employee. If both numbers are lower than targeted, you know it’s time to revisit your approach.
