“ To be a leader means, especially, having the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who permit leaders to lead.” Max DePree

5 Intangibles of Innovative Christian Leaders

What makes some leaders (who are just as smart and dedicated to God) appear to be better leaders? Have you noticed that working hard, sound strategy and even great vision doesn't always work?

What is in play that makes the difference?

Let’s look at the 5 Intangibles of Innovative Christian Leaders These "intangibles" are difficult to describe and even harder to evaluate

Most anyone can raise the bar on their leadership abilities By doing so, you can make a big difference in your life and in the lives of others

Most anyone can raise the bar on their leadership abilities

By doing so, you can make a big difference in your life and in the lives of others

Intangible #1 They Lead with Drive

Or Energy Do you know anyone who walks into the room and they fill the room with energy?

Intangible #2 They Lead with Insight

Innovative leaders have the ability to exhibit keen insight and good judgment

Discernment vs. Insight Insightful leaders are keen observers

Intangible #3 They Lead through Personal Connection This is more than personality or charisma

It’s a Positive, Confident Presence

A confident presence comes primarily from listening to God and putting to practice what He tells you

It's all about doing the right thing , in the right way , at the right time for the right reason

Do that over and over again and your confidence will soar

Personal Connection also occurs through relational charisma

There is also something about just showing up and being prepared that builds your Personal Connection

Intangible #4 They Are Contemplative

Leaders think differently than non-leaders and their life reflects it

What you think about matters Think in terms of ideas and how to make them happen

Intangible #5 They Lead with Passion

What is your great desire? Too many leaders don't know what they want. You need to know. You will never lead well if you don't know what you want.

Too many leaders don't know what they want. You need to know.

You will never lead well if you don't know what you want.

If you don't know what you want , you don't know where you are going and you therefore lack the passion to get there .

If you know what you want, you just need to give yourself permission to say it out loud and find the courage to actually do it.

It's never too late! “100% of the shots you don’t take don’t go in!” Wayne Gretzsky Hockey Hall of Famer

What is your greatest desire?

How is God calling you to make a difference? What do you see that needs to be changed?

How would you like to do that? Where are you strong?

What do you need to improve? Innovative organizations require leaders who are willing to grow

The path to leadership is one of personal growth

Good Leaders must be Good Followers You can grow as an innovative leader if you will learn to follow

7 Principles of Innovative Leadership

Principle #1 Know who you are

“ Who are you?” We must assess our resistance to and tolerance for change, our fears, our preferences, and our skills and abilities.

“ Who are you?”

We must assess our resistance to and tolerance for

change,

our fears,

our preferences, and

our skills and abilities.

Principle #2 Let go of what you've got hold of

In the Industrial Age, the first rule of “wing walking” said: “Don't let go of what you've got hold of until you've got hold of something else.”

That means you must let go of the past and forge into the future

When you hold on to the past, you eventually assume responsibility for the past because it becomes your present.

Take risks and allow others to take risks

Those willing to take risks will be greater innovators. We must discover the chains that bind us to our past and prevent us from understanding ourselves. Once we understand the chains that bind us, we must let go of them.

Once we understand the chains that bind us, we must let go of them.

Principle #3 Learn your purpose

We can learn our real purpose through lifelong reflection and interaction with others

It’s also important that we develop habits of mind

Habits of mind are developed from our values. Values propel us along the path to discovering our unfolding purpose.

Principle #4 Live in the question

In the Industrial Age , we learned to analyze a situation, isolate the problem, and administer a quick fix. In this age , we must recognize that everything is interrelated.

In the Industrial Age , we learned to analyze a situation, isolate the problem, and administer a quick fix.

In this age , we must recognize that everything is interrelated.

Flexibility is required so we can be open to the potential of the unknown.

Principle #5 Learn the art of “barn raising”

Today's emphasis on teamwork recognizes this basic need to work with and through others.

A shared purpose motivates individuals to contribute their energy, skills, and abilities.

Principle #6 Give “it” away

A paradox of life is that the more we try to hold on to something, the more likely we are to lose it

Principle #7 Let the magic happen

We must become a member of the team and utilize our abilities Joining in the shared purpose To help the team achieve its maximum potential

Leaders can make three choices: Lead Follow Get out of the way

Leaders can make three choices:

Lead

Follow

Get out of the way

The wisdom of leadership in this age is to know which action to choose for each situation. All the while, we must Remain humble Christian Servants
