Difficult Conversations  Having a difficult conversation for a Manager is inevitable from time to time.  It might not be something that we enjoy doing, but it’s something that we have to do. www.barbaranixon.co.uk

If having a difficult conversation is something that fills you with dread I’m going to share with you 3 common mistakes and how to avoid them. www.barbaranixon.co.uk

Difficult Conversation Mistake #1  You put it off You keep putting the conversation off in the hope that either the problem will go away, or someone else will deal with it. www.barbaranixon.co.uk

What to do instead  Deal with it straight away Putting it off won’t make it any easier to deal with. In fact it will probably make it worse in the long run. If it’s a conversation that needs to happen, have it. www.barbaranixon.co.uk

Difficult Conversation Mistake #2  You script it As it’s something you find hard to do, you write a script of what you want to say, and you might even have a go at planning what the other person might say too www.barbaranixon.co.uk

What to do instead  Prepare but don’t write a script Yes prepare, but not to the point where you write a script.You can’t plan what the other person might say. Instead have a think about what you want to come from the conversation for a win/win outcome. www.barbaranixon.co.uk

Difficult Conversation Mistake #3  You’re not honest As you really don’t want to come away feeling or looking like the bad guy, you blame something else, or you’re not entirely honest about the situation so they don’t feel bad. www.barbaranixon.co.uk

What to do instead  Be honest, constructive and respectful Always aim for a win/win. Be honest about the situation but supportive at the same time. Make sure that any feedback you give is constructive, and always be respectful. www.barbaranixon.co.uk
