Media Studies A2 Portfolio Research Into Regional Mags

247 is a regional magazine that aims at a younger audience from different areas of the UK. The magazine features fashion, music, films and also places to eat. This supports my research, as my questionnaire found that younger people would read a regional magazine if it included all of the above topics. This therefore makes 247 magazine an ideal one for me to look at, as it will provide me with many ideas to include in the making of my own regional magazinealso aimed at a younger audience.

The central image on the front cover stands out above everything else as the intended point of focus, as it’s colourful, bold and therefore the first thing to grab the reader’s attentioncontrasting dramatically with the masthead and cover lines which are written in a white fonthowever the fact it’s in a bold font shows that the name of the magazine alongside the content is an important aspect of the publication, and the use of white seems to make it stand out even more so against the colourful and busy background, whilst ensuring that the front cover doesn’t look over the top or garish.

The image appears to be a photo of a crowd at a festival, with a girl in focus at the forefront and the background gradually fading out into a blur. This puts the attention onto the mid shot of the girl in a bikini, immediately revealing the intended target audience as a typical ‘wild child’. As the girl has her arms up in the photo, this arguably represents her confidence, but most of all her love of music. The fact she’s not afraid to show off her body also supports the idea that this magazine is aimed at younger people, as older women are likely be covered up and portrayed as being much more civilised, and so they wouldn’t be able to relate much to this front cover.

From the content of the typography we can also see that there is clearly a main focus on music in this issue, but what’s interesting is that the focus is on where the artists are from and where they are playing. This shows us that the sale of the magazine is primarily based around regional identity- whether the audience member can associate with where the artist is from or where they are playing. Therefore, the focus of this magazine is still very much on the idea that it’s regional and is showing people what is going on in their local area.
