EXAMPLE ONE: This young man thought that this would be the perfect way to set him apart from the other applicants. You can see that he gave this much thought and was able to mix and blend two holidays in one outfit. While this might have worked at the haunted house job fair, it went sideways real quick at his interview with the accounting firm. Although you see that he is taking the company serious by wearing a tie…it was mistaken for a bow and further complicated a bad situation by suggesting that he might have gender issues that the HR Department would need to get involved with – if he was hired. The other unforeseen and negative effect was the supervisor and his family (as a child) had been terrorized by a six foot jackrabbit with an axe (an unstable young man dressed as a jackrabbit) at Yellowstone. The supervisor seeing another six foot rabbit approaching, he totally freaked out (technical medical terminology). He is now on an extended leave of absence and this is (now) subjecting our applicant to what will be an extensive period of litigation. So, what started as a clever idea to bring attention to his candidacy as wrought a whirlwind of trouble and lawsuits. On the plus side there were security cameras and the video has gone viral on YouTube with 24 million hits. Our candidate is now marketing tee-shirts and other novelties on E-Bay (also part of the law suit mentioned above). So dress in normal and fitting clothes until you are hired. What’da sayz to that? – Unhappy Dear Unhappy… Here‘s what’da I sayz to dat… is that maybe the manager was not in. Furthermore, where did we tell you to ask for the manager? We would never tell you to do that because that has not worked in five years. Let us explain why it doesn’t work. The primary reason why people want to talk to the manager is to complain and the staffs have been educated to try and solve the situation without getting the manager involved. The manager is the nuclear option. They will do everything in their power to avoid getting the manager. Of course they will tell you that the manager is in Alaska and then ask you (again) can they help you. Reread the intro and you will see how we navigate you by this… “…and I was wondering if anyone would have a few minutes to talk to me about “upcoming” positions that you might have.” If you hit them at one of those non-busy times, people have time to talk with you and since you are asking about “upcoming” openings, the sales associate usually can’t/won’t answer because they don’t know. If you come across as excited by the chance to work there because you know all about the company, you are Dressed for Success (clean clothes, a recent bath or shower and combed hair) and you live in the neighborhood; we are sure that they will find someone to talk to you (which means a first/second key, the assistant manager or even the manager - if they are available and the person you are talking with likes you…) Can you salvage this? It will be hard because you made a scene and people will remember and be talking about you. Given how hard you must have been protesting, you may be lucky to even get back into the store again. The upside is that this chain has other locations and each store hires directly…no central HR with these folks. Keep calling because they are very busy and tend to get disorganized. Once interview was finally set, I came in, was told the wrong time so had to wait an hour then finally went to the back with the hiring manager. She was very friendly and down to earth and asked me questions mostly about myself and about how I would handle situations...." After speaking with her she asked me if I had any questions....I did so she answered them then she went on to tell me I'd need another interview with the General Manager. Lucky for me he walked right in and interviewed me on the spot. He was friendly and literally repeated all the same questions she had asked so I got to better my answers a little bit... I was called either the next day or the day after and offered the job and took it. When working as a cashier the time flies. 6. Retail Sales Associate - Interview Details – I got a call about a week after applying online for an interview. I came in for an interview with the assistant manager a few days later. I was later called back the next day to come to the store for a second interview with the store manager. Both interviews were group interviews. Interview Question – • How would you handle a difficult customer? --------------------------------------------------------------------- Retail Sales Associate - I applied in-person and the process took 2 days Interview Details – I was shopping with my mom and she overheard some employees talking about them needing help. She asked if they we're hiring and they told her yes. She asked if the manager was in and when pointed to her direction she came to me. I went to talk to the manager which was a female. She told me to apply online and once I took the assessment to call and we would go from there. The girl who told my mom about them hiring, told me I could use her for a reference. I went home that night, took the assessment, and called the next day. I was setup to come in the next day for an interview. I went in and there were two other people waiting to be interviewed. I held a conversation with some employers and asked them about their experience. When it was time for me, a guy in a vest came and escorted me to the back. I sat in the eating area for about five minutes. While I was looking around at everything a tall man came and asked for me. We proceeded into the office. We sat down and he asked for my resume. He pretty much asked me about myself and since this was my first job, I couldn't tell him anything other than why he should hire me. We talked for about 10 minutes and then I was asked to come back the next day for another interview with the store manager. Came back the next day, went through the same process, and I was offered the job at the end. I filled out some paper work, entered information on the computer and was told to come in for my orientation. When I came in for my orientation I had to wear a blue shirt, black pants, and black shoes. I received my name tag, my locker, and my schedule. I also had to watch some videos and learn about the store. Interview Question – • Tell us about a time you dealt with conflict and how you handled it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Retail Sales Associate - I applied online and the process took 5 days Interview Details – Went in store and saw they were hiring. You have to fill out an online application. I filled out an application on Saturday and was called on Wednesday for a same day interview. The interview was very easy, just asked about experience, what my coworkers would say about me, etc.

A couple weeks later the manager called me to set up an interview. I arrived at the store and was led me to the back, asked me where I lived, if I was in school, my availability, work history, etc. A second store manager asked me questions about what I like to do, why I want to work here, if I had retail experience, and what I like to do in my free time, and told me the duties of the job, the pay rate, and how many hours the store usually gives to employees. I was offered the job, which I accepted! Then the manager told me the dress code, how long my background check should take, and when orientation would be. Both managers were extremely nice, not just to me but the other employees as well. I look forward to working here! Interview Question – • Why do you want to work at Ross? ================================================= Ingo's Interviews Maybe get interviewed onsite by stopping in to get an application and introducing yourself… 4502 N. 40th St. at the corner of 40th St. and Campbell Ave. every day from 2PM- 4PM. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW THIS: The name "Ingo's" was inspired by a German music teacher when one of the partner's studied violin and guitar at 7 years old. The menu is simple and clean with a Wine/Beer Garden. All food is available to go. Open everyday lunch & dinner. TIPSTER: This is a hard one to crack...new place...nothing to study...Better have your OLD SCHOOL GAME down pat...key phrases that they use are "simple and clean," and we also know that this is a German Wine/beer Garden. OK what does this mean? It means that I need to study up on German food and wine before I go to the interview. Also since they phrase it wine then beer, I know that they are more upscale than a beer bar but more relaxed than a traditional sit-down. Really want to nail the interview, brush of your high school German and sprinkle phrases into the conversation....think I am kidding? What local German Wine & Beer Garden wouldn't want someone who speaks GERMAN?

13. Sam Fox, Upward Projects restaurants in the works for Uptown Plaza Fox Restaurant Concepts and Upward Projects in talks to open restaurants in the redeveloped Uptown Plaza. Phoenix-based Upward Projects, which is run by Craig DeMarco and Lauren Bailey, operate five popular restaurant concepts just a few blocks north of Uptown Plaza including Postino Winecafe and Federal Pizza. Bobby Williams, partner at of Vintage Partners, said he is in serious talks with the restaurant group about opening a new concept in Uptown Plaza. Fox Restaurant Concepts spokeswoman Anita Walker, said the company is working on opening a Flower Child location in the center. Fox introduced Flower Child, a healthy fast casual restaurant in April 2014 with a location on 44th Street and Camelback Road in Phoenix. "We are trying to handpick those restaurants and get those done first," Williams said, "It just helps our leasing effort to say Sam (Fox) is going here and Craig (DeMarco) is going there." Williams said he is talking with around six different local restaurant owners about moving into the center. He thinks getting restaurants will be easy to move into that area. And now, the city is looking to expand that social hotbed a few blocks west in Farmer Avenue. If you were to walk from Mill Avenue to Farmer Avenue, the comparison between the two is like night and day. While Mill Avenue has what seems like an endless amount of bars, nightclubs and restaurants, the area near Farmer Avenue and First Avenue has empty lots and buildings. Two of the buildings that occupy that space – formerly known as The Sail Inn and Thorens Showcase and Fixtures, respectively – were both noteworthy contributors to Tempe's business. The former featured local music and became an iconic Tempe venue, and the latter created designs used throughout the Valley. Neither business operates in Tempe any longer, and Thorens has been long gone for years. But the new developers are making their best attempts to honor what was once there. In July 2013, Fox Restaurant Concepts purchased the warehouse on 149 W. Farmer Avenue formerly used by Thorens Showcase and Fixtures. Fox Restaurant Concepts (FRC) and its owner, Sam Fox, have made quite a name for themselves with successful restaurants sprawled throughout the state, including places like Sauce and Olive & Ivy. But Fox's original intentions for purchasing the warehouse were not for fine dining. Put on your walking shows and be prepared to knock on some doors as we have found over 170 restaurants in downtown Phoenix. How many jobs do you need? Out of 170, you should find more than one willing to hire you. Many are all within blocks of each other and if you plan it well you can hit a lot in one afternoon. The window of opportunity is 2-4PM weekdays. Does every one of these 170 restaurants have openings? NO! But there are enough that do to make the effort worthwhile. If you ran through 170 without any success or even 20 during the height of the hiring season, then you need to take a new look at how you are presenting yourself. There is a way to do this that will enhance your ability to start a conversation and talk your way into an interview. Never start your conversation with are you hiring. That is just plain stupid and will result in failing to get a job. You must understand that 80% of you getting hired centers around your availability and flexibility. So why not start the conversation with “I just moved into the neighborhood…” (or “I am getting ready to move into the neighborhood” or “I live right next to the lite subliminal message. rail”) and plant this Always ask if anyone would have a few minutes to talk to you about “upcoming” openings as you live here in the neighborhood. Always ask to fill out an application (do it neatly and correctly (remember it is a reflection on the quality of your work). Take a note pad and several pens to take note, write down names and numbers to follow up on this application. YOU MUST have a direct phone number which means that you will either pick the phone up and answer it when someone calls or that you are capable of returning a call with 30 minutes (you have a window of 1 hour before the employer decided that you are already working elsewhere or that you are not really interested in the job after all and he calls the next person on his list). I have seen 5 people lose jobs last week because the employer couldn’t reach them. Sad! Resumes are OK but, they get lost easily and are not needed to get the job. A better method is to use MS Word Business card template to make some

We could spend three pages to explain the psychology of American Business with the humble business card but, you wouldn’t read it…so trust us and give it a try. The smart part of this old school, localized job search is that I am going to come prepared for the places that I scheduled to visit by having researched (doing my homework) the restaurant, studied the menu and I am going to show up like I am ready to start work now. Never leave a place without asking about other, local places that might be hiring. Never leave without getting the name and number of who I need to talk to about following up. I am going to be persistent and call (or better yet) show up every couple of days to show them that I really did want to work for them. Over the years, here in this valley, this has been the second best way to get a job…the first is I know someone or that my aunt works there. It is luck…the luck of being in the right place at the right time talking to an employer who didn’t have an ad on Craig’s List…this is the luck that the only two people who know about this job are the employer and me. I like those odds!!!! We did not post all 170…you need to do something…you need to be more active in your job search than us because this is more critical to you and your family than it would be to us. 28. USED JOB SHACK INSIDER…. Sales Associate (Seasonal) I applied online and the process took 6 days - interviewed at Urban Outfitters Interview Details – I applied on the website and received the standard “impressive application" email requesting an interview. I chose the closer of the two dates described on the email and showed up at 12:40 for my 1:00 interview. I was told to wait outside the store at the couches. I soon noticed two other sharply dressed individuals that I was correct in assuming that they were also there for the interview, we waited together for about ten past years and then the interview began, it was simple quick, and nearly effortless, my advice is to read what is said on this website it honestly helps with the interview process. After the first interview a second manager came out and asked some questions about scheduling. I then signed a release for a background check and then went on my way. As I got home I checked my email and there was the ethics survey link in my email. It was straightforward and there was no objective choice, read it but don’t take forever. I completed the survey/interview on Thursday and then received a phone call from the manager offering me a position. Applied online and the process took 3 weeks Interview Details –I applied online to a new store opening in my area. A couple of weeks later, I received an interview stating that they were holding essentially walk- in interviews at a local hotel, in a window of a few hours. I went there dressed in Urban Oufitters apparel (greyish shorts and a coral button-down with some knock- off Tom's) and interviewed one-on-one (it probably would have been a group interview, but no other candidates were there at the time) with one of the ladies who was there. Some of the questions were: •Tell of a time you had good customer service. •Who or what is your inspiration? •Tell a few things about yourself or how would you describe yourself? A week or two later, I got a call saying that I was hired. As it was a new store opening, they really needed workers to help out, therefore I don't quite know if I was actually successful at the interview or if they just hired me for the muscle.

Interview Question –What would you do if you noticed a customer acting suspicious, as if they were about to steal? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sales Associate Interview I applied online and the process took 1+ week - interviewed at Urban Outfitters Interview Details –I applied via their website online. About two+ weeks later, I got an email requesting an interview in their store. It was a group interview with 7 other people; they said they were looking for 3 or 4 people to hire, 5 tops. We were taken into the stock room and interviewed by one of the managers and another lead staff member. The questions were pretty basic even for someone like me who has never worked or interviewed for a retail store. Examples: why Urban, what is your dream job, what is loss prevention/how to deal with it, when have you gone against what a supervisor has told you to do, what trends do you see, if we gave you $100 what would you buy, describe the last group work experience you had, etc. Really casual and laid back, too. You didn't have to answer any of the questions if you didn't have a great answer for it; I think I answered all but one. After the interview, they told us they'd let us know about another interview in about two days, but when I got home I received an email for a second interview and also the online questionnaire. The questionnaire is really not as difficult as some reviewers are making it out to be. Just remember you are applying to work at a famous retail corporation and showing up to work high every day would not be acceptable. Lots of questions about fairness in the workspace and drug use. Other than that it's really common sense. My second interview was a 1-on-1 with the manager. Also very casual, asked similar questions but more personal about who I am as a person and what I am looking for in a workplace and fellow employees. I could tell that they were already really interested in hiring me, showing how important it is to just be yourself in the first interview and definitely show your interest in fashion and specifically that you have the UO "look." After this interview I waited about 4 or 5 days and got a call in the evening offering me the job. I accepted over another job offer. Interview Question –What is something that most people don't know about you and that we can't figure out from your application or an online search? Negotiation Details –No negotiations as I had no retail experience. Offered a little over minimum wage in my state.

Sales Associate Interview - Scottsdale, AZ I applied in-person and the process took 1 week - interviewed at Urban Outfitters Interview Details –My interview experience with Urban was relatively simple. After filling out an application while visiting the store one day, I received a call the next day to come in for an interview. The interview was in group format with a total of 10 possible hires and 2 interviewers. The interview was very casual and consisted of the interviewers getting a real feel of who you are and if you'll fit in with the look and attitude of the company. They definitely prefer people that are interesting and have something going on with their lives. After the interview, I was called the evening of that same day and offered a position. I was one of only three people to be hired in that group. Interview Question –Where do you see yourself 5 years from now? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sales Associate I applied in-person and the process took 4+ weeks - interviewed at Urban Outfitters Interview Details –I was recruited to work for Urban in the fall of 2011. For such a basic retail job, I cannot imagine a more competitive experience. It all begins with a group interview. Dress to impress and moreover, dress the way you describe in your application. When I walked in, the manager noted that she recognized me based on my application description/ fashion inspiration. (Also, if you put something lame on your app like "I draw fashion inspiration from me" you're going to get an eye-roll and no one will take you seriously) The group interview begins and you are asked questions as a group; meaning you either have to speak up first or be prepared to give an answer that stands apart from the rest. Beware of repeating answers, even if you feel the same way. They are interested in two things: Number one, someone who really really values customer service, but not in a generic way. Secondly, Urban wants individuals who are passionate and above all authentic. (A.K.A. Cool and knowledgeable.) Once you pass the dreaded group interview, they weed out the dummies through an oddly worded personality test. It's unlike those standard I agree/disagree tests, they are long-winded questions meant to test both your ethics and your reading ability.

31. READ THEM CAREFULLY. I can't tell you how many smart people fail because they try to rush through it. If you make it past the personality test there will be a personal phone interview with the store manager, followed by an in-person interview where they will evaluate you further. Consider the fact that they don't want another suck-up, they want someone who can be cool and friendly at the same time. Interview Question –What is something you did in a past job that went against company standards? ================================================== We are not fast food pizza. We use a real oven; prep many of our items daily, including a few sauces, our dough and a variety of toppings. CASHIERS PT/FT - No Late Hours Hours are flexible but include mornings, nights and weekends. A food handler's card is required. We prefer someone with prior restaurant experience and who has open flexibility, as open availability is more likely to result in full time work.
