Standards are an attempt to answer an essential educational question: What knowledge and skills do we want our children to learn? Standards drive the critical elements of our educational system—curricula, textbooks, tests, etc. Standards set priorities that determine the overall direction of our schools. Unfortunately…standards : Unfortunately…standards Cover only core subjects. Cover too many superficial topics: a mile wide and an inch deep. Focus on short-lived memorization of facts. Compartmentalize knowledge into subject-specific silos and discourage interdisciplinary perspectives. Are measured by standardized, high-stakes tests that assess only a fraction of skills and themes critical to student success in life. Standards should also… : Standards should also… Include life and career, learning and innovation, and information, media, and technology skills students need in the 21st century (Standards cover only core subjects.) Promote deep understanding that represents true subject mastery (Standards cover too many superficial topics: a mile wide and an inch deep.) Focus on the skills of analysis and synthesis that enable lifelong learning (Standards focus on short-lived memorization of facts.) Standards should also… : Standards should also… Encourage interdisciplinary perspectives and 21st century themes (Standards compartmentalize knowledge into subject-specific silos.) Measure skills and themes defined in the 21st century framework (Standards are measured by standardized high-stakes tests that assess only a fraction of skills and themes critical to student success in life.) Seeking Excellence and Equity : Seeking Excellence and Equity We must begin to reconcile these views. We must believe that in the 21st century all students will need to perform to high standards and acquire mastery of core subject material. We must believe that in the 21st century all students will gain the cognitive and social skills that will enable them to deal with the complex problems of our age. Seeking Excellence and Equity : Seeking Excellence and Equity We must believe that instruction that supports 21st century skills requires a rich variety of teaching methods—direct, project-based, group, self-directed, and everything in between—to ensure that all students achieve their potential. We must believe that learning takes place in a rich variety of contexts and should be assessed in a rich variety of ways. 21st Century Standards : 21st Century Standards Focus on 21st century skills and content Give students the context of the topics they are studying Promote deeper engagement with core subjects through analysis and synthesis, not merely descriptive or memorized facts Build understanding across disciplinary categories through 21st century themes 21st Century Standards : 21st Century Standards Engage students with real world data, tools, and experts they will encounter in college, on the job, and in life Go beyond content knowledge to identify other 21st century educational supports Allow for multiple measures of mastery Use accountability as an indicator of progress, rather than a system of sanctions What’s next for Talladega County’s Teacher and Students? : What’s next for Talladega County’s Teacher and Students?
