1. God provides all your Needs…not your Greed - 20th June 2017 “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”(Philippians 4:19). A philosopheronce said:“Godhas providedenoughtofulfill all yourneeds andsome of yourwants, but not yourgreed."A needisdefinedassomethingyou require because itisessential orveryimportant. It isto have to have something, orto wantsomethingverymuch.A wantis different.Itissomethingthat isnot reallyessential butneverthelessyouwill wishfora particularthingor plan of action. "Want" isnot usedin polite requests.Greedisdefinedasanintense andselfishdesire forsomething, such as wealth, power, orposition. In God’screationprocess,He createdeverythingthatwe see, andfromthatHe identifiedwhatwe ‘Need’tolive asperHisplan forhumanity. He isalsogracious to allow some things…afew things, that we may ‘Want’stemmingfromourhumanbehavioral traits. Godhas a wayof separatingour Needsand Wants as He is not pulledintoourselfishnessof ourwants…howeverdesperatelywe mayprayfordays on end.AsChristianswe prayto God desperatelyseekingHisprovisionformanythingsinlife suchas:a promotion, finances, overcomingserious sickness, varyingproblems…the listisendless. If ourrequestis a true ‘Need,’Godwhowill see thiswill certainlyprovide forHisfaithful Children.Butmostof our prayersare mostlyforour ‘wants.’Theyare NOTessential inGod’seyes, butremainsasessential andat timeseven more prioritized overourNeedsinlife. One mayprayfor a holidaybungalow,aLamborghini or eventobe the presidentof the country all drivenbygreed. Butas Christianswe needtobearinmind that we can't arm twistGodto give us all we want…because He knowsourreal need andHe will provide…!We canlearnfrom Philippians4:19,“AndmyGodwill meet all your needs accordingto the riches of hisgloryin ChristJesus.” There are at least170 versesinthe Bible thatreferto the waysGod providesforus. While prosperity seekers andprosperitypreaches mightalwaysbe lookingformoneyorpossessionstomiraculously arrive,we shouldtake a closerlookatwhat God desirestoprovide forus. Like any goodparent,God whoisOmniscient(havingcompleteorunlimitedknowledge, awareness,or understanding;perceivingall things) would nevergive uswhatHe ‘knows’wouldharmus.Hisintentis to helpusdevelopChristlikeness qualitiesinus, sothat we become saltandlightinthe world as stated by Jesus. We can understandthiswhenwe read Matthew5:13–14, “Youare the salt ofthe earth. But if the salt losesits saltiness, howcan it be made salty again? It isno longer goodfor anything, except to be thrown out andtrampled underfoot. 14 “Youare the lightof the world. A town builton a hill cannot be hidden.” God doesnotwant us to see Himas a heavenlysource of mere material possessions...to supplywhatwe ask whenwe askHim because He isour God and NOTour magician…!AsChristianswe needtobear inmindthat simplyacquiringthingsisnotthe fundamental goal of thislife asstatedin Luke 12:15, “Then he said to them, “Watchout!Be onyour guard againstall kindsof greed; life does not consistin anabundanceof possessions.”
2. God wantsus to knowthat thisworldisnot our home and therefore whatwe needistoshiftourfocus to the eternal life while still livingthisone. Therefore He differentiatesbetweenourneedsandour wantsbecause He knowsthat where ourtreasure isour heartis also.We can learnfrom where He said as appearingin Matthew 6:19-21, “Donot store upfor yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermindestroy, and where thieves break in andsteal. 20 But store up for yourselvestreasures in heaven, where moths andvermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in andsteal. 21 For where yourtreasure is,there your heart will be also.” Whensomeone asksus:What doesit meanwhenwe are toldthat God provides?AsChristianswe need to answerthat God isconcernedwitheverypartof our being:spirit, soul, andbody.Asthe facetsof His character are infinite, sothe waysGodprovidesforusare beyondanythingwe canask or imagine. We can read fromEphesians3:20, “Nowto himwho isable to do immeasurablymorethan all we ask or imagine, accordingto hispower that is at work withinus...” We can trust Hisgoodness, guidance, and shepherdingcare to domore for us than we couldeverachieve onourown.God providesawayfor us to developanintimate, conversational, obedientrelationshipwithHimsothatwe can leadourselves and othersintoa “Psalm 23” qualityof life. Those whohave faithin Jesus Christasonessaviourand steadfastlybelievethat He is “my” shepherd,he orshe can faithfully say, “TheLORD is my shepherd,I lack nothing.” (Psalm23:1). In the Lord’sPrayer,JesusteachesHisdisciplestoaskforprovision, andourdependence onGodis affirmedeachtime we pray,“Giveus thisday our dailybread” (Matthew 6:11). Inanotherteaching JesustellsHisdisciplesnottoworryaboutfoodor clothing. The Fatherknowsourneeds. He desires a covenantrelationshipwithus, andthatinvolvestrustingHimtomeetourdailyrequirementsand seekingfirstHiskingdom andrighteousness aswe canread in Matthew 6:33, “But seek first his kingdomandhis righteousness, andall these thingswill be givento you as well.” But inall this, one’sfaithinGod and Hisprovisionplaysanimportantrole. We canlearnfrom Mark 11:22-25, “Have faithin God,” Jesusanswered. 23 “TrulyI tell you,if anyonesays to thismountain,‘Go, throw yourselfinto the sea,’ and does not doubtin their heart but believes that whatthey saywill happen,it will be done for them. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for inprayer, believe that you have received it, andit will be yours. 25 Andwhen you stand praying, ifyou holdanythingagainst anyone, forgivethem, so that your Father in heaven mayforgive youyour sins.” Ina similarcontext Jesusexplainsaswe findin Matthew7:9 -12, “Whichofyou,if your sonasks for bread, will givehim a stone? 10 Or ifhe asks for a fish, will give hima snake? 11 Ifyou, then, thoughyouare evil, know how to give goodgiftsto your children, how much more will your Father inheaven give goodgiftsto those who ask him! 12 Soin everything,do to others what you wouldhave them do to you,for this sumsup the Law andthe Prophets. God’sprovisionextendstoHisongoingrelationshiptoall of His creation, whichis entirely dependenton Him.Often,we take forgrantedthe rainthat falls, the sunthat comesupeverymorning, the refreshing windsthatblow, andthe tidesthatcleanse ourshoresandinvigorate the lifeinourvastoceans… a multitude of knownandunknownblessings. Therefore whatwe needtobearinmind isthat all these thingsare watchedoverby our lovingGodinHis provisionforus. Similarlyhave youeverwonderedwhy youask God for somethingandHe givesyoujustthe directopposite of it?Simplystated,He won't supplyyourgreed, because He will supplyjustthose thingsyouneedpertime. Therefore asChristians we needtotrust Him to avail usall the awesome things thatwe needthatHe has promisedinHis Word…certainlynotourgreed!
