Targets Technology presents new challenges for today’s students and educators: • • • • • • Face-to-face bullying at school often continues to escalate online. Damaging material can be broadcast to a large and invisible audience, anonymously, and instantly. Cyberbullying is the misuse of technology to deliberately and repeatedly bully someone. Most cyberbullying incidents begin at school Cyberbullying can include: interpersonal violence, aggression, humiliation, and harassment It is damaging and leaves those involved feeling unsafe and alone. In its worst form, cyberbullying is illegal and can lead to students harming themselves. Social Media Awareness for Schools aims to reduce the overall occurrence of cyberbullying in all of its forms by:     Teaching students to be mindful, respectful, responsible media interpreters, creators, and communicators Informing students of the risks and repercussions of living in a constantly connected digital world Enabling students to protect themselves and make sound decisions to manage their risk online Providing educators with effective strategies to prevent and mitigate cyberbullying in schools 2

Social Media Awareness Workshop for Students 90 minute auditorium presentation or 40 minute classroom workshop for students: • Cyberbullying is a major problem. Outlining the problem in relatable terms. • • • • Protecting your online reputation is important. Examining the repercussions of technology misuse • • • How does online carelessness and foolishness, affect college admissions, work opportunities, and social relationships? Sexting a private, provocative picture can quickly become a public problem. Can I really control who sees what I send? What students need to know about web-based personal publishing. • • • • Real-life examples that stress the seriousness of the problem. How should I respond to negative, offensive, or threatening posts? How can I empower myself and others to take a stand against online cruelty? Are my privacy settings maximized so that I am safe online? Are my posts really as hidden or deleted as I think they are? Does everything I post or say digitally last forever? Safekeeping of personal information online and learning the risks of making friends online. • • • Who am I really talking to online? Am I sharing too much about, WHO I’m with, WHERE I am, and WHAT I do? Are my passwords and usernames secure? How easily can someone else pretend to be me online? 3

Social Media Awareness Workshop for Educators Half-day with educators, Individual leadership sessions, 1-on-1 or small groups, 1-3 hours: • Socializing online: An overview of students’ use & misuse of technology. • • • • Effective strategies to prevent cyberbullying in your school. • • • How do students misuse, texting, email, IM, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, tumblr, and other personal publishing technologies? How can I recognize the warning signs of cyberbullying? Am I aware of the less obvious forms cyberbullying? Do I understand the potential emotional, psychological, and behavioral consequences of cyberbullying? What can I do to prevent cyberbullying? Do I know the necessary elements of a comprehensive school cyberbullying policy? Step-by-step action plan for dealing with cyberbullying at your school. • • • • What are the cyberbullying legal issues that I need to be aware of as an educator? How can I effectively assist a student who’s been a victim of cyberbullying? How can I appropriately handle a cyberbully at my school? How do I communicate with parents about cyberbullying? Methodology overview: • • • • School Auditorium with pupils and educators, 90 minute presentation Individual class sessions with pupils and teacher, 40 minute presentation Half-Day sessions with educators in a workshop setting Individual leadership session, 1-on-1 or Small group session, 1-3 hours 4
